New team members, perspectives, and skills

We are almost half-way through the summer - this time of year always seems to be a time to recharge and to re-energize.  It's a great time to try out new experiences and add knowledge and new faces to your network. Having just adopted a dog from our local shelter, we are experiencing some of that in my household. Belle brings a new cadence to our routines, new knowledge and perspectives - as well as greatly expanding our family network with dog-admirers.

Here at HalTech we have some new faces too, Vanessa has joined us as a content writer to help us better tell the story of the many successful clients we work with.  As a recent Sheridan grad and part of an award winning journalism team we're sure Vanessa's talent will have a positive impact on our communications.  At the Board level, to build on the strong foundation provided by our original Board and Chair, we have welcomed three new members: Jamie Barron of Deloitte, Chris Herbert of MI5 and Frank Mckeown of BEDC as well as welcoming Sanjay Singhal as our new Chair.

Looking Towards the Future: Technology

Innovation in Halton

On Monday July 28th HalTech had the pleasure of hosting a meeting of the minds- a round table discussion with some of the most seasoned professionals in Halton's advanced manufacturing and technology sectors.

The group congregated to discuss a new report commissioned by HalTech, written by David A. Wolfe and Nicola Hepburn of the Munk School of Global Affairs. The report takes a look at established Technology and Innovation Centres (TICs) in Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. and examines if these models would work well in the Halton Region.

Participants of the round table-- including author David A. Wolfe, measured the benefit of having a centre for technology and innovation, and how existing models can be tailored to fit the needs of advanced manufacturing business in Halton.

The consensus in the room was a structured network, developed in partnership with industry, could be very beneficial to businesses in the Halton Region. This type of network would not only complement existing institutions, but help close any gaps that may exist in terms of research and technology access.

The goal is to ensure small and medium sized businesses across the region are on track for growth and are getting the necessary support to become stronger and more competitive in a global market.

The idea was very well received during the initial discussion, but a network of this size will take some time to develop. The full report won't be released to the public until later this year but going forward it will be interesting to see what the future holds for a Technology and Innovation Centre in Halton.

Success Story- Discover New Career
Opportunities at
Acadiate

This time of year a slew of new graduates are on the hunt for the job that might kick-start their career. The job market can be extremely tough for graduates who have education and

fresh ideas... but are held back by a resume that lacks experience. Zane Westmoreland, the founder of Acadiate was in the exact same position back in a 2008-- fully capable to do a job, but poorly prepared on how to break into the job market. In 2011 he took matters in his own hands by creating a platform focused on improving student employability.

Acadiate gives students the tools they need to market
themselves to potential employers. Their student employment products are cloud-based and designed to help students to connect, measure, understand, and improve their employability.

The platform is not only
limited to students, Acadiate also services employers and educators. The platform helps employers target appropriate job candidates and provides a

a quick and effective way to filter out candidates prior to the interview stage. Acadiate also provides a number of tools to educators, so they can help students transition from student to employee.

Fast forward to 2014 and Acadiate has certainly seen some growth. The company has been deployed in classrooms at Centennial College and has made partnerships with McMaster University's MARS Apprenticeship program. They've also been recommended as a tool for students by the Council of Ontario Universities. Westmoreland credits some of his success to his HalTech mentor, calling his outlook and advice incredible

He also has some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, "persistence and self-belief is very important. Understand that overnight success is a myth. There is a learning curve, it usually takes years of experience before companies see real success. Enjoy the journey and the challenge"

Going forward Acadiate hopes to continue to grow their business launching pilot programs at new schools this fall.

Here at HalTech we wish Acadiate nothing but success!
