Greetings!

I am excited to share the incredible progress happening across our campus, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teams.

Our Operations team has been busy enhancing our campus facilities, focusing on safety, functionality, and security. Recent improvements include the removal of hazardous trees, renovations in Building 300, and updates to the Police Department. Additionally, a new lighting project is underway, and the Griffin Centre has received valuable upgrades.

Our Small Business Center (SBC) has also achieved remarkable success in supporting local entrepreneurs. From January to June 2024, the SBC helped launch 17 new businesses, created 24 new jobs, and retained 43 more. With 37 training events and 172 hours of counseling, the SBC continues to empower our community.

Finally, our IT Department has implemented crucial upgrades to meet our growing technology needs, investing over $572,000 in infrastructure and security enhancements.

We are proud of these accomplishments and look forward to building on this momentum in the months ahead.

Halifax Community College 2023-2024 Academic Year Roundup

2024 Fall Convocation

Fall Convocation was a remarkable and inspiring celebration for our dedicated educators and staff. With the theme "Believe. Achieve. Celebrate.," the event served as a powerful reminder of education's transformative impact on shaping futures.

As we embark on a new academic year, Convocation's message resonates deeply: to believe in the power of teaching, achieve new milestones, and celebrate every success. The energy and enthusiasm at the event were palpable, reflecting the commitment and passion of our educators who work tirelessly to guide and inspire students.

This year's theme encourages us to focus on the positive outcomes of believing in our mission as educators. It's about striving for excellence and recognizing that every lesson taught, every challenge overcome, and every goal reached is a step toward a brighter future.

As we move forward into the semester, let's carry the spirit of Fall Convocation with us. Let’s continue to believe in the potential of every student, achieve great things through our collective efforts, and celebrate each success, big or small. Whether in the classroom, through extracurricular activities, or in our daily interactions, every moment is an opportunity to make a difference.

Medical Laboratory Technology Receives Five-Year Accreditation

The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) has awarded Halifax Community College's Medical Laboratory Technician Program five years of continuing accreditation, effective April 19th, 2024. This recognition reflects the program's commitment to excellence in education and its adherence to the highest standards in clinical laboratory sciences.

The five-year accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our faculty, staff, and students, ensuring that we continue to provide top-tier training for future healthcare professionals. Congratulations to everyone involved in achieving this significant milestone!

New Training Vehicles Enhance Program Standards

Our President, Dr. Patrena B. Elliott, and Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Sanethia Smith, have successfully secured funding for the acquisition of new training automobiles that meet all standards set by the Criminal Justice Standards (CJS) Commission. These vehicles have been meticulously selected to ensure optimal training experiences for our students. To maintain full compliance and safety, each car has been expertly fitted with appropriate lights and safety equipment. This upgrade significantly enhances our training program, providing students with hands-on experience using industry-standard resources and reinforcing our commitment to excellence in education and public safety preparedness.

In the most recent rankings, the Customized Training department has soared to 2nd from the top, only succeeded by Pitt Community College. This remarkable turnaround reflects the hard work and innovation of our team, who have focused on delivering high-quality training programs tailored to the specific needs of businesses in our region.

The department's success is a testament to its ability to adapt and grow in response to industry demands, ensuring that our local workforce is equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in a competitive market.

This achievement not only enhances the reputation of our institution but also strengthens our ties with the business community, paving the way for continued success in the years to come.

Workforce Development: Creating Job-Ready Individuals and Generating Revenue

The Workforce Development department is committed to equipping individuals with the skills necessary to meet the immediate demands of the job market while also generating revenue for our institution. By focusing on high-demand trades such as electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, and other technical specialties, we aim to train job-ready people efficiently and effectively.

Our Immediate Focus:

We recognize the urgency of training technical specialists and have set an ambitious goal to stand up Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC programs within just 60 days. This rapid deployment is crucial to addressing the skilled labor shortage in our community. Beyond these initial programs, we plan to introduce seven additional programs over the academic year, expanding our reach and impact.

Strategic Growth Areas:

To maximize our effectiveness, we are concentrating our efforts in three key sectors: Medical, Industrial, and Transportation. Each sector will have a dedicated coordinator to ensure that our programs are aligned with industry needs and that our graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce.

Revenue & Profitability

A major focus of our strategy is to increase the profitability of our programs through Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) funding and self-sustaining training initiatives. We believe that by offering relevant and high-quality training, we can not only meet the needs of our community but also contribute significantly to the financial health of our institution.

Strategic Growth Areas:

As promised, we have successfully launched the Defensive Driving Training program in partnership with the District Attorney's Office. This program is already operating in the black, demonstrating our ability to create financially viable training options that serve our community.

Through these initiatives, Workforce Development is poised to make a lasting impact, providing essential skills to individuals while also contributing to the growth and sustainability of our institution.
