Hudson Catholic Hall of Fame
Elects Five New Members
| |
|
The Hudson Catholic Hall of Fame has bestowed Hawk immortality on five new members, four individuals whose service to Hudson Catholic and to the nation stand out, along with the illustrious, ‘Hoosiers’-like accomplishments of a group of athletes who reached the pinnacle of a sport that is no longer played at Hudson Catholic.
Headlining the 2025 class of inductees will be our current President-Principal and 40-year servant of Hudson Catholic, Mr. Terry Matthews!
William ‘Bill’ Cullen ’72, long-time CEO of AEGIS Insurance, is recognized for his venerable business career and for bringing a partnership with St. John’s University's Greenberg School of Risk Management to Hudson Catholic.
Highly decorated Staff Sgt. William ‘Billy’ Neil ’87 USA, USN gave his life in service to our nation on March 28, 2008 in Afghanistan as a member of Special Forces, having reenlisted after five years as a civilian. Hudson Catholic is proud to honor Billy's life, service, bravery, and sacrifice.
Larry Costanza '76, long-serving member of the school's Board of Consultors, and Championship JV Basketball Coach, has provided decades of service to Hudson Catholic, its students, athletes, alumni, and events.
Our 2000 Hockey State Tournament of Champions Team will enter the Hall in the 25th year anniversary of its stunning series of victories over other powerhouse programs, culminating with a victory over Public Champion Bayonne at the Meadowlands Arena.
As we draw nearer to our Induction Dinner slated for May 15, 2025 at The Liberty House in Jersey City, we will feature the individual profiles of our electees in depth. Please circle the date now to come out in support of your classmates and former English Teacher, Athletic Director, Disciplinarian, and current Principal and President.

Black & Gold Golf Honors
Draw A Crowd!
The 11th Annual Black & Gold Golf Event at the Essex County Country Club was its customary success, in large part due to our Honorees -- Mark Kahrer '79, Dr. Andrea Blake-Garrett AP, and Eduardo Pena '90 -- and our many sponsors, led by New Jersey Resources, PSEG, American Express, Belair Transport, Morgan Levine Dolan, Mike Kahrer '75, Town Title, ABFS, and Allan Briteway.

Calling Our Veterans of the Armed Services
|
You know who you are. But we don't always.
We are attempting to complete our records of Hawk service veterans as much as possible. If you have not received a communication about our planned Veterans Day Special Edition of Building The Legacy, chances are that we do not have a record of your service. In that case, please send an email to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org to tell us your branch of service, rank, and years of service, and we'll include you in our planned tribute to Hawk military veterans on Veterans Day this year.

|
The year is underway and the halls are alive again with the voices of our students. As I often say, Hudson Catholic is not 790 Bergen Avenue. That is the address of a cinderblock building. Hudson Catholic is its students, its staff, its alumni and its families. They give life to the building. I want to take this opportunity to invite all of our alums to come visit the Hawks’ Nest. I know you will be thrilled to meet the young men and women who make up our fantastic student-body. Stop by, walk the halls and reminisce. As Dorothy said, “There’s no place like home!” You will always have a home here at Hudson Catholic.

We Remember
The Alumni Association marks its 31st consecutive year of sponsoring and conducting the Annual Mass of Remembrance, always on the nearest Sunday to All Souls Day. The accompanying photo is then-Alumni Association VP Tom Valente '84 announcing the first Mass in 1993. As the Mass is hosted in the LaSalle Chapel on campus, space constraints limit attendance by invitation only from the Alumni Association to the families of those whom we have lost in the prior year among the Hudson Catholic community. For an invitation or more information, please contact Larry Basinski ‘70 at info@hawkalumni.org with "ALUMNI MASS OF REMEMBRANCE" in the subject line, or by phone to the Hawk Alumni Office, 201-332-5970 ext.140.

For the nearly 800 Hawks who have joined our mailing list
over the past year, we invite you to have a look at our
'Stay Educated' video.
Created three years ago,
it still resonates on what it feels like to be a Hawk.

Our gridiron Hawks followed up their opening victory with another, defeating the Hoboken Red Wings, 14-12 at JFK Stadium in Hoboken on September 13th. Once again, Kyle Mercorelli combined with Amori McNeil to provide the margin of victory, this on a 2-point conversion. The following week delivered the Hawks their first defeat, 28-14 vs. Newark Central. And a 14-6 loss to Snder, drpped the Hawks to 2-2.
[Results of Immaculata to be added here]
With the season ledger now reading 2-1, the remainder of the schedule brings Newark East Side away at 1pm on October 18th, Paterson Kennedy on October 25th 7pm at Caven Point, and November 1st 7pm at the Morris Catholic Crusaders.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of a couple of members of the Alumni Association, the recently donated lightbox lectern has been beautifully reconfigured to reflect our "Sign of Faith" in its wonderful lightbox. A special thank you to Ms. Sharon Ziemian is in order, for her wonderful treatment of the black leather upholstery adorning the new Presidential Lightbox Lectern.

Summer Theatre Recap: Moana
The Summer Stage at Hudson Catholic presented the musical Moana Jr in July, in which 26 students ages 4-14 participated in a month-long intensive theater camp, coming to Hudson Catholic four days a week, three hours a day for the full month. All Saints Catholic Academy, Hoboken Middle School, Golden Door Charter School, Primary Prep, Horace Mann Middle School, and OLC all had students participate in this exciting new theater program. Mrs. Sarah Barbi directed the show, and the Hudson Catholic Alumni Association, under the direction of Larry Basinski '70 and Fred Barbi '86, coordinated lights and sound production elements. Incoming 9th grader Elizabeth Cannela played Maui and 8th grader Abigail Degnan played Moana. Youngest cast member, Emery, the daughter of math and science teacher Jacinda Velazquez, played Baby Moana. Many of these young actors will be invited to return to the Hudson stage to take part in the chorus of our spring musical RENT in May and we hope they also will return next July for our four week theater camp, culminating in a production of Descendants the Musical.

It looks like the skills and services of recent Hudson Catholic Board departure Dr. Fred Bonato, PhD are in great demand. No sooner had he resigned his role as Provost & Vice President, Academic Affairs at St. Peter University to accept the role of Interim Dean for Community Health at Montclair State University, Dr. Bonato has now been announced as Interim President of the former-Manhattan College, now Manhattan University! Turns out, he has a fondness for Lasallian educational institutions!

SECURE Act of 2024
to Impact 401K, 403B, IRA & Roth accounts,
Younger Savers & Older Drawers
| |
|
Recently enacted, this law contains a slew of changes to retirement account rules and tax breaks for the various types of retirement accounts, so be sure to consult your financial advisor or tax professional, as what is presented here is intended as select informational highlights, not financial advice. It has something for everybody.
Of note to our older alums, SECURE increased the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) age to 73 as of January 1, 2023, however, if you turned 72 in 2022, you had to take your first RMD on April 1, 2023. The RMD age eventually moves to 75. And beginning this year, SECURE eliminates RMDs for qualified employer Roth 401K plan accounts. (By the way, RMDs are a great way to make a significant gift to Hudson Catholic and avoid paying taxes on an IRA withdrawal by going the QCD route -- Qualified Charitable Donation. Ask your IRA custodian.)
Of note to our younger alums, as of 2024, employers may now make matching contributions to your retirement plan account based on your student loan payment amount. Note: student loan payments resumed in fall 2023 as a result of the Supreme Court decision striking down the student loan forgiveness plan.
For anyone who may have lost track of their 401K account -- more common than you might think -- SECURE calls for the creation, in the next two years at the Department of Labor, of a searchable national database to help those who have lost track of their retirement benefits. If you can believe it, it is estimated that millions of such accounts have resulted in nearly a trillion dollars in unclaimed retirement benefits. Go get some! If this is you, you can thank us for the reminder by gifting us a 10% finder's fee!

Former Faculty Focus:
Interview with Jim Gannon
| |
|
Residing in Naples, Fl, Mr. Gannon recently huddled in Belmar with Casey Zachowski ’73, Carl Gargiulo ’73, and Neil Gargiulo, Former Faculty and Carl’s brother.
BTL: What years did you serve at Hudson Catholic, and what did you teach?
JG: I came in after the start of the 1966-67 school year and taught World History, Driver’s Ed, and Geometry, before settling in the Math Dept. I had dropped out of grad school after being bored to death at UCONN, because I had participated in such a good academic mathematics program at SPC. Over the years, I taught nearly every math course offered. From 1969 to 1985, I served as department chair. I left HCHS in 1987 for a job with NJ Bell, the forerunner to Verizon, but it should be noted that Hudson Catholic was a major portion of my life.
BTL: Focusing on your time as Athletic Director, which years did you serve in your role?
JG: I took over for Brother Pat at the start of 1972-73. Tom Murphy was hired to be my assistant. I remained the bowling coach but gave it up a shortly before I left the school in November of 1987.
BTL: Those were some pretty heady years in our athletic program. What is your fondest memory of that era?
JG: I loved being the AD. I remember most the county championship game against St. Anthony’s. Mike O’Koren has said that the time he was most scared playing basketball was when the court was stormed after that game -- I was the one who got him from under the pile! I have always felt a deep affection for the men who passed through Hudson, but the athletes have a special place in my heart. I also take great pride in having started both the wrestling and ice hockey programs, with support and financing from the Men’s Club.
Q: How would you describe the times at Hudson Catholic during the Spanarkel and O’Koren years?
We had waited a number of years for the sports program to catch up with academics. Jim and ‘Little’ made the most significant contributions to our leap, and their personalities elevated it further; but there were so many guys who contributed to the rise in athletics. I remember like it was yesterday that our gym was packed during their glory days. I am sure we had fire violations for most of our home games.
BTL/JG: Word association - one word:
● Bonner? - Jumping
● Campion? - Sir
● O’Halloran? - Barrister
● Brother Pat? - Loyal
● Brother Luke? - Class
BTL: Tell us something that occurred or almost occurred that we generally do not know.
JG: 1) Brother Al played the spoons at my first wedding. 2) Jake, “Jumping Joe,” and I were in St. Vincent’s Grade School together in the early 1950s and, in the spring of 1967, I convinced them to apply. Years before I became AD, former AD Eric Erickson told me if I ever took over as AD that I had to hire Ed Agresta, which I ultimately and happily did. Br. Luke Maher was a mentor to me, being the Vice Principal when the inexperienced mathematician was hired. Lastly, I’ve always looked at anyone who came to the school as a younger brother. If you look at my FB friends, Hudson guys dominate.
BTL: What would you like your Hudson Catholic teaching legacy to be? Your athletic legacy?
JG: The knowledge that many of the students I taught went on further in math, and that I tried to make everyone appreciate how math could benefit them. I hope that anyone who participated during my years as AD enjoyed the experience, and that, while the great coaches I had had more of an effect on our success, I was there to ease the way.
BTL: Three dinner guests
JG: That’s easy: My father, James Gannon, a silent leader, way ahead of his time, and lit up every room he ever entered; my late son, Michael Dennis Carlise Gannon, who passed in 2005 and is missed every day; and, Mickey Mantle, who caused me to want to play centerfield for the Yankees in my youth.
And that, friends, is The Great Gannon, one of the revered early Faculty members who helped put Hudson on the elite academic map very quickly following the school’s founding, and who received the ‘73 ‘Hawk’ Yearbook dedication from the senior class.

Alumni Spotlight
Leadership, Service, Achievements
(and occasional whimsy)
| |
Big Hawks on Campus. The Fall Semester on college campuses had barely begun when three of our most recent alumni had made great first impressions for their teams! Gianfranco Ponce '24 was named NJAC Player of the Week as he began his collegiate soccer career at Ramapo College, scoring the 'Hat Trick' in his team's 4-2 season-opening victory, and adding a fourth goal in his third game. Kayla Spiegel '24 also made her mark at Emory & Howard University in Virginia, where she was named Player of the Match in her first ever collegiate rugby match. And, keeping with the rugby theme, Curtis Raeford '19 was named captain of the Nazareth College (Rochester, NY) Men's Rugby Team.

Out for a Therapuetic Walk. Carl Gargiulo '73 appeared on Channel 2 CBS-NY News recently during the September 17th opening of Jersey City's Reservoir Park at Pershing Field. He cited how the park would be a great location for many of his rehabbing physical therapy clients (from Twin Boro PT at 1 Nardone Place) to walk for physical activity. Notice he was at the ready with his specs. Hawks are prepared!

Enter Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame
| |
|
On October 2nd, two Hockey Hawks -- Ken Such ’80 and Ed Hochstadter ’88 -- became the 9th and 10th Hawk alumni to be enshrined in the County Sports Hall of Fame, joining Jim Spanarkel ‘75, Mike O’Koren ‘76, Wayne Witkowski ’71, John Nagel ‘77, Al Long ’73, Tom Downes ’78, Dwayne Sabb ’87, and Brian Ellerson ’98. In addition, they join five Hudson Catholic coaches in receiving such honors -- George Blaney, Rocky Pope, Bill Gargiulo, Mike Zadroga, and Tom Gaynor -- in representing Hudson Catholic.
Kenny is recognized as a venerable area and community hockey coach who played high school hockey for the early Hawk teams, and went on to coach some of the very successful teams in our program history. He coached St. Peter's Prep hockey even longer, in addition to serving as an assistant football coach there for 25+ years. Ed was an outstanding All County goalie for the Hawks, who played a key role in the Hawks' 1987 and 1988 Handchen Cup titles as NJ Interscholastic Hockey League American Division champions.

Gary, Sr. is one of four ’69 Hawks to deliver sons to The Home of The Hawks, joining Harry Morris (the very first!), Tom Bender, and Frank Infante.

What’s a ‘Phonathon’? It is a just-about bygone activity that was used to raise alumni donations to the school before the age of email, websites, social media, and SMS messaging. Alumni conducted these fundraising events annually during the mid-to-late 90s, alternating between the Main Office at school and the Provident Bank offices at their Bergen Avenue HQ, courtesy of Mr. John Carroll, alumni parent and 1995 recipient of the Hudson Catholic Signum Fidei Award. Accompanying photo is circa 1995.

Courtesy of Joe Hardiman '74:
Hudson Catholic was constructed on the site of the old Fourth Regiment Armory, not to be confused with the national guard armory two blocks further east that still exists. The entrance arch to the Fourth Regiment Armory was preserved and has served as the entrance arch to Pershing Field on Summit Avenue (off Carlton Avenue) in the Jersey City Heights for six-plus decades.

In the last issue, we mistakenly reported that the last Hawk alumnus to be inducted into the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame, before this year's honors for Coach Ken Such '80 and Hockey's Ed Hochstadter '88, was Football's Dwayne Sabb '87 in 2016. Regrets for overlooking Baseball's Brian Ellerson '98, enshrined in 2022!

No Hawk Left Behind
We lose touch with some of our graduates who move around, go off to college, start careers, get married, etc. In some cases, they retire, having used their work email to receive ' BTL', and forget to notify us of a personal email address. Help us find them again and make it harder for us to lose touch. Many on this list have siblings who are Hawk alumni, so turn them in at advancement@hudsoncatholic.org or send them to hudsoncatholic.org/stay-connected to update their contact info.
