Hello Dear Readers:

More than once I've been asked "who's your publicist?" Well, if you know a little bit about Chile Lindo, you know that it's a one woman show so that kind of question makes me grin from ear to ear. This network has developed slowly over the years, by connecting organically to a community that is truly attentive and engaged. You voted in the The Bold Italic's 2020 Awards and here's what they published: "... the people have spoken, and our readers chose Off the Beaten Track at 16th and Capp as the winner."

According to The Bold Italic "no category may have been more competitive than our "Most Creative Outdoor Dining award, meant to highlight the most unique open-air eating situations that have popped up over the months." Furthermore, may I add that Chile Lindo and Slate Bar were in competition with big budget operations. So, once again, thank you for supporting us and thank you to the musicians that made it all possible

We continue enduring, worldwide, a monumental challenge and everyone is living on the edge. Whether you believe in vaccines or not, or believe in the pandemic or not--we are all uncertain of the circumstances we face, mask or no mask. I think that there's always a grain of truth in everyone's perspective, so I advice that you never waste your energy in trying to convince others or to change people's minds on subjects like religion, politics, or conspiracy theories; especially now, when emotions are blowing up like fireworks. This is a time to come together and support each other no matter how tempting it is to play the devil's advocate. In the long run saving a relationship will always outshine having the last word in an argument.

Justifiably, many have lost faith in our government institutions and feel that they can't be trusted. Yet, this may be the one time they are going to get it right and not betray us for the third deadly sin--avaritia. I trust that the doctors, nurses, and scientists are working very hard to save lives and they need our cooperation and support.

I am a firm believer in divine intervention. Divine intervention is my number one asset to keep Chile Lindo in business, and it's not even taxed. So, at a time when the Christmas Star shines over our horizon may we all find inspiration in life, free ourselves of ominous suspicions, and attain the consciousness that brightens our humanity.

Feliz Navidad,
Paula Tejeda

*Avaritia: "As defined outside Christian writings, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs, especially with respect to material wealth."

"The love we’ve seen for Chile Lindo and Slate Bar’s event has been overwhelming since we launched these awards. Reader notes have poured in. “It’s totally helped our jazz crowd appreciate something in 2020,” one TBI reader said in a nomination form. “It’s been refreshing, joyful, inspiring that in the midst of the craziness, Paula created a small oasis where we could connect with each other through music played by local artists, excellent local food, and enjoying being with each other again. Paula’s tenacity and determination, not giving up hope in the midst of very bizarre times has been incredibly inspiring.” "

Blanco en blanco/ White on White
Dir. Théo Court
Chile/Spain/France/Germany, 2019, 100 min
In the prelude of the twentieth century, Pedro arrives in Tierra del Fuego, a hostile and violent territory, to immortalize the marriage of a powerful landowner. Fascinated by the beauty of the bride-to-be, he betrays the rules and is left to face the land, crawling with violence and marked by the genocide of the land indigenous. Theo Court won Best Director at the this year's 67th Venice Film Festival with Blanco en blanco.

"When I first saw the photographs of a massacre of the Selknam people perpetrated by Julius Popper in Tierra del Fuego, I was filled with questions: Who took these photographs? Who took part, as an unseen voyeur, in these events? The land was the next thing that caught my attention: an area full of vast, infinite plains, a site marked by barbarism and survival in extreme conditions. Absentee landlords who financed the forceable settlement of colonies, the intrinsic barbarity of an organized and legitimatized ‘modern’ society. Within this universe I attempted to create a way of representing this uncomfortable, contradictory, and disturbing grey area."

Maite Alberdi for representing Chile
at the Oscars!

I first discovered Maite Alberdi's work on The New York Times Op-Docs' 2014 selection of her documentary short "Another Tea?" (La Once). I became an instant fan. Later I heard about her film "Los Niños" and I was lucky enough to catch it on a flight from Chile. Recently, on a Sunday morning while listening to NPR, I was surprised to catch her interview discussing her latest project "The Mole Agent."

NPR Movie Interviews:

Now, I'm thrilled to learn that Maite Alberdi's most recent film is Chile's submission to the upcoming Oscar's Foreign-Language Film category. The film was a Sundance selection this year for World Documentary and it won the Audience Award at San Sebastián.

¡ Mucha suerte Maite Alberdi !
