DCCA Testimony on Confirmation of DDOT Director
DCCA President Susan Volman testified to the DC Council Committee on Transportation and the Environment Roundtable on October 26th. The subject of the roundtable was the confirmation of Everett Lott to be DDOT Director.

We took this opportunity to share with the committee some systemic problems with DDOT processes that we hope will improve under the new Director. Our concerns were:

1) The lack of community engagement for major projects;
2) The lack of efficient tracking for minor projects; and
3) Collaborative projects with DDOT that seem to disappear into the ether.

Changes and Additional Opportunities for Waste Disposal

Residents will now be able to drop off their household hazardous waste and electronics recycling every Saturday from 7 am until 2 pm at the Benning Road transfer station located at 3200 Benning Road, NE, Washington, DC, 20019.

Document shredding will occur the first Saturday of every month at the Benning Road Transfer Station, beginning November 6, 2021.

Electronic recycling in your neighborhood
Replacing your electronics? DC is holding multiple e-cycle collections in various locations in NW DC over the next two months. See the schedule here.

Problems with Scooters on the Sidewalk?
The new tethering requirement for rental scooters has reduced the number of scooters parked in the middle of sidewalks. But pedestrians are still encountering tethered scooters that intrude onto the sidewalk or are tethered illegally to our fences. Also, scooters riding on the sidewalk continue to be a problem for pedestrians in some areas. Yet, DDOT reported to the Pedestrian Advisory Committee that since1/1/21 they have received zero complaints from pedestrians concerning parked or moving scooters. They can’t record problems if we don’t report them.

Scenes from the Drag Race: Dupont was Alive with High Heeled Fun

DCCA Board Member Phil Carney (and Scoop the Dog) shares photos from Tuesday night and a story about how it all began...

For those who don't know how our neighborhood's best silliness started...years ago some drag queens were doing a bar crawl. Leaving Annie's Paramount they were drunk and rather than walking one block to JR's Bar and Grill (JR's never had a grill-did have a bar.) they decided to race in their high heels!

There was no race last year and it was great to have our grand neighborhood tradition, sponsored by the Office of the Mayor, continued for the 34th year.

From drunken silliness to a fabulous event that draws people from the entire Metro area. Folks in costumes parade before the race and afterwards pose for photos. The race itself is over fairly quickly: with racers who actually race, racers who attempt to go fast in high heels and the majority of racers who take a while to get to the finish line.

DCCA's Scoop the dog with a message to "Scoop Your Pet's Poop" did not participate for years because he wasn't a Halloween costume. Then I decided to add a witch's pointy hat and have him join in the fun and parade before the Race. Heard the usual chants: "Scoop your Pet's Poop" and a new compliment, "Thank you for your service."

Dupont Says a Loving Arrivederci to Diego
Q Street lost a friend last week and neighbors are sharing fond memories of the joy (and great hair) offered to the Dupont community. Popville shared news of a neighborhood icon's passing and the Washington City Paper tells the story of Diego D'Ambrosio's life from the perspective of his sons. T

D'Ambrosio opened his own shop in 1965. Then around 1980, he moved his business to its current location, The Moorings building, a nautical-themed landmark building located at 1901 Q Street, NW. In recognition of D'Ambrosio's contribution to the business community, that segment of Q Street was renamed in his honor.

Diego’s visitation will take place Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the National Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Falls Church. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church.
Reminders
