Here are a few tips to keep you and your family healthy this fall season:

Educate Yourself

Tooth decay happens when bacteria consume the food that remains in between our teeth after meals and they produce acid as a byproduct. This acid eats away at your teeth.

Consider the Timing

Try to eat candy and other sugary foods around or during your meal times. After every meal you eat, regardless of size or quality, the pH of your mouth turns acidic and can take up to 40 minutes to be neutralized. So, the longer your mouth is acidic, the more cavities you’ll get.

Water is good

Water is good at neutralizing acid. Rinsing and swishing with water after meals can help rinse food away and decrease mouth acid. This means less cavities!

Avoid the Sticky Stuff

Sticky foods like taffy or gummies stick to your teeth and it takes saliva a lot longer to wash them away. This increases the chance of tooth decay.

Plan it Out

Not all candies are created equal. Have your family pick favorites and donate the rest. Look for organizations that can help you donate candy to troops overseas like Operation Gratitude. Natural Smiles is happily collecting for this cause. Your stash of candy and sweets can very easily get too big and your teeth will thank you :)

You are What You Eat

The foods you chose to consume have a lasting impact on your well being. Our bodies are complex machines that need good nutrition for optimum performance.
