Elk Rapids Citizens form group āCoalition of the Possibleā to improve civility and collaboration in the community and is hosting two events in October.
The Elk Rapids Coalition for the Possible is pleased to announce two events that will both inform and entertain in a positive and humorous way as well as involve our youth in community advocacy.
1. On Thursday, October 22 at 7:00pm, the coalition will host Author Doug Griffiths, who wrote the best-selling book ā13 Ways to Kill a Communityā, on a Zoom call available to all community members. Doug has a long-time passion for helping rural communities find ways to be prosperous and enduring. His book is filled with stories of challenges and solutions. HALLOWEEN UPDATE
The Elk Rapids Village Council recommends everyone read the MDHHS press release regarding Halloween. The Council suggests households choosing not to participate in handing out candy keep their porch light off, while those that choose to participate put their porch light onāto serve as a signal for trick-or-treaters. In the downtown River Street business district, trick-or-treaters are asked to travel one-way on sidewalks, rather than criss-crossing River Street. 2020 CENSUS RESPONSE DUE NOW!
OCT. 2, 2020 ā On October 2, 2020, the message below was sent to census takers working on the 2020 Census:
āAs a result of court orders, the October 5, 2020 target date is not operative, and data collection operations will continue through October 31, 2020. Employees should continue to work diligently and enumerate as many people as possible. Contact your supervisor with any questions.ā
The U.S. Census Bureau is currently updating 2020Census.gov and Census.gov and all external and internal guidance to ensure compliance with the orders.

Township/Village Response Rate to date = 52% ā¢
Every resident counted represents $3000 per year

Census counts determine local funding for programs such as:
⢠School lunches, special education, Head Start, rural and adult education
⢠Child abuse protection programs
⢠Hospitals and fire departments
⢠Rural development infrastructure grants and low-interest loans
⢠Highway construction
⢠Natural disaster response
⢠College Pell grants and vocational training.
Also, the number of House of Representative seats each state gets (voting power) $675 BILLION in federal taxes are distributed based on census response
Michigan received $29 Billion in 55 programs in 2016, based on 2010 census data

MICHIGANDERS CAN GIVE ENERGY INPUT AT VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSES
Youāre invited to participate in the third in a series of virtual public open houses hosted by Consumers Energy to gather suggestions for its Clean Energy Plan. The plan eliminates coal and helps achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
At the open houses, Consumers Energy wants to learn whatās most important to their customers and key stakeholders and to learn their vision of the stateās energy future.
The third session will be Tue. Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m. and will focus on Protecting our Planet. To participate in the open house, visit www.MICleanEnergy.com for links to join the event. The open house is scheduled to last 45-minutes.
The final open house will be held:

The Elk Rapids Women group (ERW) is offering a chance to receive an educational grant of up to $600. Women living or working in Antrim County will be given priority during the selection process.
The purpose of the grant is to support women who are preparing to advance themselves in order to enhance their employment, pursue further education, or development their careers. The grant may be used for but is not limited to tuition, assisting with a GED, attending job-related educational programs, or enhancing employment skills. The grant is not available to recent high school graduates due to the scholarship resources available to this population.
Applicants may be currently employed or seeking employment. Classes may be taken at the college level, through adult education courses, or other community educational programs. The grant may be used for tuition or other related educational costs.
To request an application through the mail or for more information, call Laura Schmidt at 231-350-0462 or lschmidtsh@gmail.com. The deadline for submitting an application is November 15, 2020.
Applications will be reviewed by the ERW's Scholarship Committee. Finalists may be called to schedule a personal interview with the committee before a final selection is announced.

This is to announce that Silly Sister will begin Pottery Classes Round 3.0 for October-November 2020, as detailed below. As this may be the second or third round of classes for at least some of you, classes will be geared BOTH toward newbie potters, as well as continuing potters. Instruction and demos will be geared toward multiple levels of ability, so never worry about getting bored!
