Key to substance use prevention is talking openly with our students and helping them understand the impact of substance abuse on their health. Studies show that the earlier an individual starts smoking, drinking, or using other drugs, the greater the likelihood of developing an addiction. Every year that substance use is delayed during the period of adolescent brain development, the risk of addiction and substance abuse decreases. HYPE is a new after-school student group for Medway Middle School students that stands for Healthy Youth Empowerment. The group will meet once a month on Tuesdays starting October 17 at 2:00 pm.

This extracurricular activity aims to help build empowered youth leaders to advocate for health and wellness issues and encourage healthy choices amongst peers.

Learn how to harness the power of your camera’s controls in this 2-session class! You will learn what automatic settings to use and which to change, how to brighten and darken images, adjust flash settings, change the color, and focus on what YOU want! Classes are Tuesday, November 7 and 14, at 6:30 pm in the Burke//Memorial Library.

This credentialed course is designed for anyone needing to respond to a first-aid emergency. Participants are taught how to handle injuries and manage illness in the first few minutes until help arrives. The six modules covered in this course are First Aid Basics, Medical Emergencies, Injury Emergencies, Environmental Emergencies, Adult CPR, and Pediatric CPR. This course meets the requirements of childcare providers, teachers, foster care workers, camp counselors, Scout leaders, youth organizations, coaches, babysitters, and parents—ages 13 and up. Thursday, November 16 at 6:00 pm in the Burke Memorial Library.

If you are planning on selling your home in the future, then this course is right for you. You will learn how to find and hire the right agent. In this course, you will learn what is necessary to fix or not fix before putting your house on the market and tips on home staging. You will also learn how to price your home and different techniques to generate more interest and offers. The class will focus on the home selling process from beginning to end including the offer process and negotiating techniques. The instructor is a licensed real estate agent, property manager, and real estate investor. Wednesday, November 15 at 6:30 pm.

Join us for a fun evening and learn how to make Royal Icing and fill and outline your cookies! You will receive 12 pre-baked cookies ready to be decorated. Some designs included are Snowflakes, Snowmen, Christmas Trees, and Stockings. You will learn how to make the perfect Shortbread cookie (recipe included), get tips on how to keep your dough from spreading, and learn the secrets of piping and using different decorating tips on Thursday, December 14 at 6:30 pm.

'SUPMEDWAY

What is the #buildingbrightbrains campaign about? It is a series of initiatives to share messages with parents and adolescents that brains continue to develop until age 25, and choices made during youth can change the brain's structure for better or worse. Like this post or follow SUP Medway as we continue to empower both teens and their parents with tips on what "boosts" the brain and facts on what to avoid to not "bust" brain development.

According to MacLean’s Hospital, studies have debunked that adolescents can be kept safe if they learn to drink alcohol under adult supervision. This includes in Europe, where rates of adolescent binge drinking and alcohol misuse are higher than in the US. Whether supervised or not, teenage alcohol use inhibits the production of GABA, which is associated with impulse control and better decision-making. Adolescent alcohol use also inhibits verbal learning between binge drinking episodes. If you want to help your adolescents regarding alcohol, help them mature into responsible decision-making instead through behaviors that help with growing GABA production in the brain. This includes activities like aerobic exercise and meditation. Also, try facilitating new experiences since adolescent risk-taking is associated with “leaving the nest” preparation. As a parent, you may want to try and model some of these things yourself. #buildingbrightbrains

Vaping introduces nicotine quickly into the bloodstream. Initially, nicotine improves mood concentration, relaxes muscles, decreases appetite, and decreases feelings of anger or stress. Doesn’t sound too bad. Over time, however, vaping increases the risks of addiction, mood disorders, and reduction of impulse control. Vaping can lead to changes in the brain in those areas governing memory, attention, and learning.

One way to get a lot of the same benefits is to read. Reading for 30 minutes daily can improve memory, concentration, and sleep, reduce stress, and may also help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease.

Some people drink alcohol as a way to connect with people. Serotonin is one of the neurochemicals strongly associated with feeling connected. Alcohol and other drugs prompt the brain to release an excess of a different neurotransmitter, dopamine. The problem is, generally, the brain doesn't release both serotonin and dopamine simultaneously. This means our connection with our people while drinking is superficial at best.

Genuine connection requires being present, being interested, and being vulnerable.

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive function skills like impulse control, decision-making, and problem-solving, is the front part of the brain that is the last to develop into the early 20s. Do not expect perfection, yet encourage these skills in teens as their brain develops to build a vital "executive function" muscle.

Many great books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, and more are still available. We are still one of the cheapest bag sales around. Stop by this weekend and stock up for the winter! All proceeds are used to support the Medway Library. The $5-A-Bag book sale is Saturday, October 21, from 10:00 am-2:00 pm.

Stop by the Medway Fire Department on Saturday (10/28) from 11:00 - 2:00 pm.(NEW DATE). Dress in costume and join in on all the fun! It’s National Fire Prevention Week, so learn all about fire safety with our interactive programs: spray the firehouse, check out a truck or ambulance, and learn about fire safety measures and solutions in your home. The famous pumpkin smash will happen at 2:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

The Medway Cultural Council seeks the community's feedback regarding their organization. Please take a few minutes to complete the online survey. We would appreciate your reply by October 31.

The second annual celebration of Diwali - the Festival of Lights - is on November 11, 2023, at Medway High School. The Medway Cultural Council and Medway Marches (co-sponsors of this event). Additional sponsorships are available.

A ceremony honoring our Veterans will occur at Matondi Square on November 11, 2023. The ceremony will start promptly at 11:00 a.m. with the bells ringing. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Medway Village Church, 170 Village Street. All are invited to attend. Matondi Square is located at Village Street and Holliston Street near Town Hall (155 Village Street).

A Special Election will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Medway Middle School "Old Gym" for the Tri-County Regional Technical Vocational High School Building Project. Absentee voting in person or by mail is now available for this election. The last day to request a ballot by mail is Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, by 5:00 pm. The last day to Absentee vote in person is Monday, October 23, 2023, by noon at the Town Clerk's Office at 155 Village Street, Medway, MA 02053. If you have questions regarding the election, please contact the Town Clerk's office at 508-533-3204. 

For those families looking for a low-fear Halloween option, check out Cub Scout Troop 367's haunted house at Christ Episcopal's Church, 14 School Street. The event is on Saturday, October 28th, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Concessions are available.

Household Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, October 28, at the Recycling Center, 46 Broad Street, from 9:00 a.m. - to 1:00 pm. Collection is limited to 25 gallons or 25 pounds per household. Please remain in your vehicles at all times.

Metalsmithing with Heather Beck. Wednesday, Oct 25 at 6:30PM at the Medway Library. Learn about the structure of copper and how to create drawings in metal and use letter stamps to create textures and words on a bookmark. This program will be held in Makerspace. You must be 18 years or older to participate, and registration is required.

We are pleased to invite you and your furry friend to a Teddy Bear Picnic. This adorable affair will include picnic-style refreshments, a sing-along, story time, playground time, crafts, games, making your teddy bear, and more. Pre-registration is required. We can barely wait!

Join us as we discuss clutter on Wednesday November 8th at 6:30pm! It can be overwhelming and debilitating to deal with the stuff that surrounds us. Most of us want our spaces to feel calm and function in an organized way but getting started can be challenging. Learn what clutter is and strategies to deal with it. Brainstorm system ideas specific to your needs with organizational professionals. Everyone leaves with resources and inspiration! Class is November 8 at 6:30 pm.

Join us on Thursday December 14^th to create a sentimental piece for yourself or a perfect Holiday gift! During this two-hour class, we will each create our own custom pebble art family picture using various styles of beach stones, driftwood, and shells directly hand picked off local New England beaches. Each design can contain stones representing two to six people while being glued on cardstock and enclosed in a rustic gray frame

Medway Community Farm is delighted to invite you to an evening of culinary delight that promises to be a feast for the senses. Please join us for an “Autumn Night Out" – a Farm to Fork Delight on October 21, 2023. In addition to great food, drinks, and friends, we will have live music, so bring your dancing shoes. There will also be door prizes and a silent auction to help raise funds for the Farm.
