Superintendent Update
Exploring a four day week

The Hallsville School District is committed to continuous improvement, which includes evaluating our practices and considering the “why” behind the way we do things. Sometimes this reflection leads us to make a change. However, I don't mean to suggest that we should ever make changes solely for the sake of change.

In recent years, we have heard from parents, staff, and community members wondering why our district has never considered the implementation of a four-day school week. I suspect this is due in part to the fact that we have four-day districts neighboring on both sides (North Callaway and Harrisburg). In response to the repeated inquiries, the district administered a series of preliminary stakeholder surveys this fall, and based on results generally favoring the possibility of change, a study group was convened to conduct further research.

The study group includes parents, community members, and staff, representing a cross-section of district stakeholders. The group held its initial meeting during the week of October 28, will meet several times during the coming months, and plan to report their findings to the Board of Education during regular meetings over the coming months. The group has set the creation and review of potential calendars to be one of their top priorities. The Board is not expected to be asked to make any decision on the matter until at least January.

Members of the study group are also quite interested in continuing to share information with the community and gather even more input. During their first session, the study group began to address a variety of issues that are often discussed as districts explore a four-day option. Topics like student achievement, community childcare needs, food insecurity, impacts on extracurricular activities, and retaining quality staff are common but also include many factors unique to each school district.

The district has established a web page (linked below) to document the progress of the study group. The page includes a listing of the members of the group. I would encourage everyone to visit the page and review the materials provided there. I would also encourage all members of our Hallsville community to share your questions and thoughts with the members of the study group. In this way, we can be sure the group is responsive to all perspectives and the various needs of our community.

Titled “Walk of Life,” the mural represents the diverse group of people that come from all walks of life. Mrs. Williamson’s mural depicts “Pop Art” shoes in bright colors, completed using paint, stencils, spray paint, and black outlining.
