On the Other Hand... : 

There is an old joke about Harry Truman asking for a one-handed economist, because he was tired of every economist using the classic hedge, "On the other hand..."

Over the past few years Hampton Roads has experienced a great deal of contradictory economic data, where some indicators are positive, others negative, and the remaining indicators are flat. While the Nation and the State have embarked on much clearer economic pathways, Hampton Roads remains mired in a state of economic confusion, all at once growing, contracting, and staying the same.


Employment (Jobs) vs the Employed in Hampton Roads
Differences between Employment (Jobs) and
  • From the Current Employment Statistics (CES) , a survey of businesses
  • Does not track self-employed, private household workers, or workers on unpaid leave
  • From the Current Population Survey, a survey of households designed to measure employment and unemployment
  • Counts many types of work missed by the CES
  • Workers with two jobs are only counted once.

News You Can Use: Senators Kaine and Warner and Representative Scott Introduce Legislation to Help Hampton Roads with Sea Level Rise        
U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner and U.S. Representative Bobby Scott introduced the Building Up Infrastructure and Limiting Disasters through Resilience (BUILD Resilience) Act, a bill to establish a competitive grant program for resilient infrastructure investment. This legislation will bolster the ability of regions like Hampton Roads to implement projects and strategies to reduce regional vulnerability to threats like sea level rise and recurrent flooding. HRPDC Launches New Website for Regional Construction Standards
The Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) recently launched a new website for the Hampton Roads Regional Construction Standards (HRRCS). The communities of Hampton Roads developed the first edition of the HRRCS in December 1999 to simplify construction and improve the quality of roads, utilities, and other right-of- way improvements built across the region. Sometimes life's path forward takes you back to a place you've been. Just ask Jenny Redick. Ms. Redick re-joined the HRPDC in April 2017 as the Regional Inclusive Emergency Planner. It is the position she held from May 2008 until August 2011.   READ MORE   
Inclusive Emergency Planning Subcommittee Participates in VDOT HRBT Test  
HRPDC's Jenny Redick (Regional Inclusive Emergency Planner) and Cheryl Simpson of the Endependence Center joined VDOT's Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel administrators and employee at the Long Range Acoustical Device (LRAD) demonstration. READ MORE
