Dear Friends and Partners:
As we begin 2025, a new chapter unfolds. A new year often brings a mix of emotions: hope for what lies ahead, relief that the trials of the past year are behind us, or even apprehension because the year before was so good that it feels hard to top. We set resolutions and make promises to ourselves and those we love.
We look forward to milestones—weddings, graduations, anniversaries—and yet we know there will be unexpected challenges along the way. We pray for health and happiness, wishing those same blessings upon the people we care for. In our quiet moments, we long for balance—to find that sweet spot where we can truly enjoy life, prosper, and grow.
All of this is normal. All of it is part of the annual rhythm of life. But here's the truth we often overlook: a wish is just a wish unless it is paired with effort. Worrying about the unknown serves no purpose. And luck? Luck is not a strategy. Resolutions without resolve are just empty words.
Instead, let's commit this year to getting better at hard. In her powerful Handle Hard Better speech, Kara Lawson reminds us that "Hard is what makes it great. You don't get to choose the hard. You just get to choose how to respond to it." Life, leadership, and family will always come with hard moments. Whether you're leading a team, guiding a family, or walking your own path toward a dream, hard is inevitable. But growth lies not in avoiding difficulty but in facing it, responding to it, and getting better at handling it. Great leaders know this truth: we cannot eliminate hard, but we can strengthen ourselves to carry it.
In the book of James 1:2-4, we're encouraged to "Consider it pure joy...whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." Hard moments aren't there to defeat us; they're there to grow us, strengthen us, and make us complete. Effort transforms the obstacle into opportunity. Perseverance turns today's hardship into tomorrow's triumph.
And here's a beautiful reminder for leaders, parents, and those striving toward dreams: you never walk alone. The burdens you carry are not yours to bear in isolation. Whether it is faith, family, a team, or trusted mentors, you are surrounded by those who lift you up. In Galatians 6:2, we are called to "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." Great leaders understand this well—leadership is not about going alone; it is about walking together, sharing struggles, and empowering others.
So, as we begin on 2025, let's be resolute in our resolutions. Let's pray for the strength to handle hard better. Let's commit to hoping for good things and doing the work that makes those dreams a reality. Let's find joy in the process, even when it's hard, and remember that we never walk alone.
To current and future leaders, and those raising families, this is your year to embrace hard work and turn it into growth. Lead with hope, effort, and the unwavering belief that you have the strength and support to walk this path well.
Here's to 2025—a year not of luck but of resolve—a year where we grow stronger in the face of hard. A year where we lead better, love deeper and stand together.
