The Power of a Walk

We need only step outside our door. We can go around the block or walk for half an hour. The benefits are positive! We know this is true. Look for surprizes in "Don't underestimate the power of a walk."

Just when we need it, Irene van der Zande shares Kidpower's new Mental Health page with us. Check it out, bookmark it and share with friends as a resource.

“One of the biggest gifts a parent can give their child, is the skills to handle tricky people.”

“One of the biggest gifts a parent can give their child, is the skills to handle tricky people.” Stella O’Malley, author of Bully-Proof Kids

Bullying … We parents and teachers work to imbue our children with kindness, empathy and respect for others. Are these qualities enough? We think we’re making progress, and up pops bullying again and again. A child is being bullied or a child is bullying. We’re only a month into the school year and already I’m reading about bullying situations at elementary, middle and high schools. Despite admirable anti-bullying policies, it seems we’re up against one of the baser aspects of human nature that is always going to crop up.

Would it be helpful if our community --parents/teachers/administrators/bus-drivers/counselors/businesses/non-profits/et.al.-- all got on the same page about understanding the nature of bullying and techniques for defeating it?

Books about Bullies and Bullying for Teens and their Allies

A great list of fiction and nonfiction books about bullies and bullying for teens, their parents, and caregivers.

There is no acceptable excuse for bullying to exist in our schools. One of the finest anti-bullying resources in the world, Kidpower, founded by Irene van der Zande, is headquartered right here in Santa Cruz County. All our schools should be models of safety for all students and adults. Some are. Some are not. Let's step up, share these resources, collaborate and do it in a way that is accurate, respectful, and caring.

The resources for educating ourselves exist. We share them with you: here, here and Kidpower Books.

Like FREEDOM, maintaining an environment SAFE from bullying requires VIGILANCE and ATTENTION.

The Lure and Benefits of Challenging Puzzles

Good for ALL Ages!

by Debbie Reber, Founder & CEO, Tilt Parenting

It's been months since I've done a puzzle, but for some reason I recently grabbed a 1000-piece puzzle from the puzzle shelf (doesn't everyone have one of these?) and started laying edge pieces out on our small dining room table.

The puzzle has drawn my kid out of the bedroom and off screens in recent days. In fact, we've been working on it together every night, sometimes while listening to a podcast, sometimes talking about music or books or whatever. We're creating a new little ritual for this season of life. And with it comes comfort and connection.

I share in case this idea of creating a new, simple ritual to carry you through this time of transition, adjusting to new routines and schedules, the change of seasons, might provide similar comfort and connection for you and your family.

Always check for new posts!
