Al Gillis is a neuroendocrine cancer patient and member of the Toronto Patient and Caregiver support group. One of Al’s hobbies is pewter casting and he thought it might be interesting to do something using the CNETS logo. Al approached CNETS with the idea and we were thrilled with Al’s grassroots approach to raising funds and awareness of NET cancer.
Al sketched out the concept and used CNETS logo to create the prototype for these beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade Zebra Keyfobs/Pendants. Pat Cowan and Rod Alexander polished each creation and Susan Lindsey added the finishing adjustable barrel knots for the necklaces. Central to Al’s idea was that the time and materials for the production of the items was to be donated and carried out by volunteers.
The Zebra Keyfob/Pendant is cast in pewter. The pewter is an alloy of tin and bismuth and contains no lead. They are completed as necklaces but can be used as a Keyfob by simply removing the leather portion from the split ring.
Al’s goal is to raise funds for CNETS and help to increase awareness of NETs. Al hopes that “the Zebra will be a conversation starter about NETs - beginning with a discussion of why a Zebra as a mascot?".
