Hanukkah is the Jewish 'festival of lights', celebrated with a menorah lighting at sundown on each of the eight days it is celebrated. This year, the holiday begins today, November 28, but the date changes every year based on the Hebrew calendar.

In Hebrew, Hanukkah means "dedication" and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C [1].

The history of Hanukkah is told in the Talmud, a sacred Jewish text. According to the Talmud, after the Jewish people overcame Greek/Syrian oppressors during the Maccabean Revolt, and reclaimed the holy Jewish temple, they witnessed a miracle. The Macabees had only enough oil for one night, but the candles continued for eight nights. Thus, the celebration takes place over the course of eight nights with a candle being lit on each night.
