A prayer of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose life we remember this week with gratitude, humility, and urgency, that we, too, might be participants in his vision:

"Most gracious and all wise God, before whose face the generations rise and fall; Thou in whom we live, and move, and have our being. We thank thee [for] all of thy good and gracious gifts, for life and for health; for food and for raiment; for the beauties of nature and human nature. We come before thee painfully aware of our inadequacies and shortcomings. We realize that we stand surrounded with the mountains of love and we deliberately dwell in the valley of hate. We stand amid the forces of truth and deliberately lie. We are forever offered the high road and yet we choose to travel the low road. For these sins O God forgive. Break the spell of that which blinds our minds. Purify our hearts that we may see thee. O God in these turbulent days when fear and doubt are mounting high give us broad visions, penetrating eyes, and power of endurance. Help us to work with renewed vigor for a warless world, for a better distribution of wealth and for a brother/sisterhood that transcends race or color. In the name and spirit of Jesus we pray. Amen."

Keep Shining!

All of my life I have been told,"Be patient!" I have interpreted that to mean different things in different situations. Usually it has been what the person telling me to be patient meant. We are told "love is patient." As I strive to be more patient, what does it mean in my relationship to God and others? As I seek God, I am forced to be patient and not force my view or thoughts, but to learn God's will and in God's time. The same can be said with our relationship with others. As we put ourselves, second or even third, we focus on the needs of others as they reveal it in their time. Today, be patient. Listen to what God is telling you. Listen to others with an open and humble heart. Keep shining!

The Fruit of Patience a Cultivated Virtue

Patience. It's a word that often feels easier said than done. In our fast-paced world, we're constantly bombarded with instant gratification – instant messaging, fast food, on-demand entertainment. But true patience, a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), is a virtue that requires intentional cultivation.

Why is Patience Important?

* Deepens Our Relationship with God: Waiting on God can feel agonizing, but it strengthens our trust and dependence on Him. It allows us to quiet our own desires and seek His will.

* Builds Stronger Relationships: Patience in our interactions with others fosters understanding, forgiveness, and empathy. It allows us to respond with grace instead of reacting impulsively.

* Reduces Stress and Anxiety: When we learn to patiently endure trials and setbacks, we experience less stress and anxiety. We learn to trust that God is in control and that good things come to those who wait.

How Can We Cultivate Patience?

* Practice Mindfulness: Pay attention to the present moment. This helps us to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, allowing us to identify and address impatience as it arises.

* Engage in Acts of Service: Serving others shifts our focus away from our own desires and helps us to develop compassion and empathy.

* Spend Time in Prayer and Meditation: These practices help us to connect with God and find peace amidst the chaos of life.

* Embrace Delays: When faced with delays, see them as opportunities for growth and reflection.

* Remember God's Promises: Hold onto the promises of God, even when it feels like they are taking a long time to be fulfilled.

Let us strive to cultivate the virtue of patience in our daily lives. Let us remember that true patience is not passive resignation, but an active trust in God's timing and a commitment to love and serve others, even when it's difficult.

"Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and late rains." - James 5:7

Prayer:

Lord, help us to cultivate the fruit of patience in our lives. Grant us the strength to endure trials with grace and to love others with compassion. In Jesus' name, Amen.
