Five campuses from Harmony Public Schools were named official Texas “State Schools of Character” for their outstanding efforts in promoting cultures of character and community service within their schools.

Only 12 campuses total in Texas earned the honor.

The five Harmony campuses selected are:

Harmony School of Advancement – Houston
Harmony School of Excellence – Houston
Harmony School of Innovation – Garland
Harmony School of Innovation – Sugar Land
Harmony Science Academy – Dallas Middle

Eight other Harmony campuses previously earned the honor. Four of those campuses later won National School of Character honors.

SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY
The Glitter & Glue Club at Harmony Science Academy-Laredo devoted almost a full semester to helping other Laredo kids in need.

Under the direction of Ms. Brenda Gonzalez and Mrs. Vida Haruna, the club spent the entire first semester crocheting beautiful scarves to donate to needy children at Laredo's Bethany House.

The 10-member clubs consists of students ranging from grades 6-8.

MUST WATCH: Daisy C. thought she was attending an ordinary pep rally in her school gym until her name was called and she was presented with a bouquet of roses and an $80,000 scholarship.

Lisa R. of Harmony School of Science-El Paso won the nationwide Congressional App Challenge for her app which helps seniors struggling during the pandemic.

Students built and donated two modified electric cars for young children with special needs. The cars can be controlled more easily and safely than store-bought electric cars.

Harmony has announced an across-the-board pay increases for substitute teachers starting February 14. Teachers working only a few days per week can earn up to a couple of hundred more dollars each month, while those working full-time can earn to an additional $600.

SUGAR LAND
Harmony School of Innovation - Sugar Land senior Anjali A. has been named a candidate in the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this spring.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
AUSTIN
Harmony students from across Texas will meet at the state capitol in Austin later this spring for the first statewide meeting of the HPS Service Leadership Society. While in Austin, the students will engage with state leaders, tour the capitol, and conduct a mock debate on the actual House floor.

DALLAS | EL PASO | HOUSTON
Three Harmony campuses were awarded the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for closing the gender gap and expanding young women's access to computer science coursework.

The schools awarded were Harmony School of Excellence-Dallas, Harmony Science Academy-El Paso and Harmony School of Discovery-Houston.
GARLAND
Robotics teams from Harmony Science Academy-Garland recently took home four trophies in the VEX IQ Elementary Robotics Tournament and advanced to the state championship.

This year’s theme was “Pitching In.” In each challenge, two robots competed in the Teamwork Challenge as a team in 1-minute matches, working collaboratively to score points. Teams also competed in the Robot Skills Challenge where one robot takes the field to score as many points as possible.

These matches consist of Driving Skills Matches, which were entirely driver controlled, and Programming Skills Matches, which were autonomous with limited human interaction.
DID YOU KNOW?
Last year, when the pandemic and other factors caused thousands of Texas grads to miss out on their first year of college, Harmony helped more members of its Class of 2021 overcome the odds and stay on track to earning a college degree regardless of race, gender, economic status, or perceived learning ability.
