Honoring Chesterfield's Centenarian Veterans
May just happens to be Military Appreciation Month AND Older Americans Month, so what better way to celebrate than by honoring our county's centenarian veterans?

All of these gentlemen are over the age of 100 and have served our country during their lifetimes. Not only is it an incredible honor to be able to recognize them, but it is also impressive that they are still around for us to hear about and learn from their stories!
Honoring Fallen Public Safety Officers

Along with Assistant Director Teresa Bonifas, Goode also assumes leadership of the county’s Communications and Media team, which keeps residents, businesses and visitors engaged via social media, this weekly e-newsletter, podcast, blog, videos, television broadcasts and by disseminating information through media partners, while also collaborating with other county departments on internal and external communications and crafting strategic messaging for county leaders.

Catch the Right Connection at the Buyers/Sellers Connection Conference
The Chesterfield County Procurement Department is hosting the first Chesterfield Buyers/Sellers Connection Conference on Friday, June 2 at the Thomas R. Fulghum Center in Midlothian (13900 Hull Street Road).

The Buyers/Sellers Connection Conference will offer the opportunity for the vendor community to network with Chesterfield staff including those from both the county government and school division. Staff will be able to share their knowledge and experience of the procurement process with sellers, thereby providing resources, tools, and contacts sellers need in order to make connections.

In addition to networking and searching for opportunities within Chesterfield, vendors will have the opportunity to set up one-on-one appointments with procurement staff to talk about potentially working together now and in the future.

Registration for the event is free and open now through tomorrow, May 17. Refreshments will be provided.

Join the Chesterfield Historical Society for an Interactive Performance of the 1773 Baptist Preacher Trial on Sunday, June 4
As part of the county’s celebration of the coming 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia will be holding an interactive performance on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Historic 1917 Courthouse of the 1773 Baptist Preacher Trial.

In partnership with the Chesterfield County 250th Revolutionary War Committee, this event will allow attendees to experience the trial that led Americans on the path toward religious freedom:

“The year is 1773, a minister must obtain an official license from British Crown authorities to preach in public. Archibald Cary, the magistrate of Chesterfield County, is arresting individuals who openly break this law. Citizens across the countryside begins to question the Crown’s authority to regulate religious teachings.”

Registration is required due to limited seating. Because the Historic 1917 Courthouse is an active court, a headcount with names of those attending is required for this historically-accurate portrayal.

Those interested in attending or those who have questions should contact the Chesterfield Historical Society at (804) 796-7121 or via email at [email protected]

Learn About Opportunities to Comment
on Draft of New Zoning Ordinance
In fall 2019, Chesterfield issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking the services of qualified professionals to assist the county in a comprehensive rewrite of its Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 19.1 of the Chesterfield County Code. The Zoning Ordinance serves as the primary tool to implement the Comprehensive Plan.

While the Comprehensive Plan itself has changed over time to reflect the growth and development vision for county, much of the core content of the current Zoning Ordinance remains unchanged since the 1970s. A comprehensive rewrite is under way to fully implement the future vision.

Be Mindful of Local Ordinance Requirements for Keeping Chickens in Residential Areas
Did you know a maximum of six chicken hens may be kept on a residentially zoned property with restrictions?

Chickens are always to be housed in a coop with an attached outside run and must have tops that are securely enclosed with wire mesh or similar material. Chickens running loose inside someone’s fence is not permitted. The chicken coop and run must meet a setback of 25 feet from property lines. Other fowl such as ducks, geese, swans, etc. are prohibited.

It is not permitted to have stock farm animals on residentially zoned property without a conditional use permit and roosters are prohibited in residentially zoned areas.
If You Have a Random Act of Kindness
Story, Please Share it With Us
Random acts of kindness take place around the county every day – and we want to hear about (and celebrate) them. Whether it’s paying it forward in the coffee shop line, or having kindness shown from a friend or stranger, stories of kindness can spread far and wide.

This initiative is focused on celebrating all of the thoughtful things citizens are already doing for each other, while also encouraging you to go out and do something kind for a friend, family member, neighbor, coworker or even someone you have never met before.

Submit your own kindness story by visiting https://bit.ly/3jGOPix.

Concerned About Lead Paint in Your Home? Apply for Free Assessment and Abatement Program
A child’s brain grows rapidly during the first five years of life. Research shows lead exposure can harm a child’s health and brain development.

Children can be directly exposed to this hazard if they live in an older home that contains old lead-based paint, typically built before 1978. Lead-based paint can peel and crack into tiny pieces creating dust that children breath in or swallow.

Fortunately, lead exposure is preventable.

Chesterfield County’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program was created to protect children five years and younger and expectant mothers from lead exposure. In partnership with our non-profit partner, project:HOMES, families may qualify for a free lead hazard assessment and household repairs to remove lead exposure from their homes. No county staff will enter your home. This program has serviced several homes and is currently repairing others in Chesterfield that have lead-based paint.

If you’re a caregiver of younger children in an older home, you may also qualify for this program. For more information, please contact Emily Hurley by emailing [email protected] or calling 804-718-0517.
