Celebrate Black History Month

Once again this February, Chesterfield is partnering with Virginia State University (VSU) for a joint Black History Month Celebration. Now in its 31st year, the celebration includes a variety of programs designed to explore the rich, diverse heritage of African Americans and their contributions to our community and nation.

We're excited to announce some of our Black History Month programs this year, starting with the Kick Off Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 1, 4-8 p.m. at VSU, Gateway Hall, 2894 Martin Luther King Dr., featuring music, line dancing, food and vendors.

If you're passionate about music, join us for the Sounds of Cora Armstrong , bringing her keyboard and gift of song to the Anderson Turner Auditorium at VSU on Monday, Feb. 10, 6-7 p.m. Enjoy a night of music, storytelling and fellowship.

Join renowned author Lamar Giles at the Meadowdale Library, 4301 Meadowdale Blvd, on Friday, Feb. 21, 7-8:30 p.m. as he discuses Why We Need Diverse Books. He will be addressing the importance of diversity in literature, the power of personal stories and why seeing representations of all people is an essential element to literature's survival.

Nominate a Volunteer for

Chesterfield Community Champions

Nominate a Chesterfield Community Champion!

Know a Chesterfield resident who has volunteered time and/or resources to effect positive change in their community? We want to hear all about them!

Chesterfield County announced the inaugural Chesterfield Community Champions event to honor these notable volunteers. Awards will be given to winners from seven categories:

Youth (ages 12 and under)
Teens (ages 13 and older)
Youth Group (two or more volunteers under the age of 18)
Adult (ages 18 to 59)
Senior (ages 60 and older)
Group (two or more volunteers with no age restriction)
Organization (a business, church, etc.)

To nominate a person or group, please visit the Chesterfield Community Champions webpage to complete a nomination form. Nominations are open through Friday, Feb. 7.

Winners will be announced at the award ceremony which will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 7-9 p.m. at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center (CTC) @ Hull, 13900 Hull Street Road.

Stay Safe When Gardening

with Cooperative Extension

Do you know how to protect yourself from outdoor dangers when working in the yard or garden? Chesterfield Cooperative Extension can help! They are offering free lawn and garden seminars throughout the spring, presented by Chesterfield County 's Virginia Master Gardener volunteers.

The second seminar, Critters and Toxins and Ouchies, Oh My! , takes place on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 7051 Lucy Corr Blvd. Attendees will learn how to keep yourself safe and uninjured in the yard and garden, even if you have bodily limitations. Seating is limited and registration is required .

Be Prepared with CERT

Do you want to be better prepared for disasters and emergencies? Chesterfield's popular Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT , training is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 3!

The initial training course teaches basic emergency response skills that are essential in the critical moments after a disaster, such as search and rescue, fire safety and suppression, basic medical care and disaster psychology. Classes are held each Monday and Wednesday evening from 6-9:30 p.m. for four weeks. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. There is no charge for the course, but space is limited, so enroll early!

Congratulations, Kenley Teller!

Last week, the Board of Supervisors recognized Chesterfield resident Kenley Teller for her exceptional athletic accomplishments at the U.S. Para Swimming National Championship. At nine years old, she is the youngest athlete to have ever participated and was the only athlete from Virginia to qualify to go to the National Championship.

Kenley medaled in the 50 meter backstroke, set three personal records and was awarded the 2019 Amazing Grace Award, which recognizes a developing athlete with traits of courage, friendliness, determination and cheer.

Save the Date for Chesterfield Live!

The Chesterfield LIVE! music festival returns to the Chesterfield Fairgrounds, 10300 Courthouse Road, for its second year on Saturday, May 9!

Hosted by Chesterfield County in partnership with the Richmond Symphony and the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, this free, family-friendly event will feature a range of musical acts, all performing under the Symphony's iconic "Big Tent."
