Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools, in partnership with Virginia State University, presented six local high school seniors with Leadership for the 21st Century scholarships last Friday, Feb. 17, during the annual Black History Month Scholarship Recognition Program.

The 2023 scholarship recipients are: Gabriella Baracat, Clover Hill High School; Elena Bland, Cosby High School; Madison Hawley, Thomas Dale High School; Joanne Lin, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School; Conner Reid, Midlothian High School; and William Waid, L.C. Bird High School.

Catch Up on Blog Posts from
In a new article posted to the Chesterfield On Point blog, you can learn more about the collaborative effort that helped the county's Davis Child Advocacy Center earn accreditation from the National Children's Alliance.

Staff were notified of the facility’s accreditation late last month, concluding an exhaustive multiyear process that required partnership with the other agencies that comprise its multidisciplinary teams: the police department, the commonwealth’s attorney’s office, Social Services, Mental Health Support Services, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Victim-Witness Assistance Programs and the Violence Response Team at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital.

The Davis CAC has conducted more than 1,400 forensic interviews of physically or sexually abused children since it opened in January 2018. That number was 384 during fiscal year 2022.

Adoptable Pet Spotlight
Hello there, my name is Bumble!
I'm an adorable, fluffy, short-legged pup with a big personality! I am around a year old. Nobody really knows my breed, but I am on the small side, weighing 30 lbs. Although I'm small, I am mighty. I love to sing the song of my people to you and am quite spunky.

I prefer not to be picked up or restrained for procedures. For this reason, I need a home with no small children. I enjoy the company of other dogs. Hopefully they can keep up with me I don't have a shy bone in my body!

If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.

Concerned About Lead Paint in Your Home? Apply for Free Assessment and Abatement Program
A child’s brain grows rapidly during the first five years of life. Research shows lead exposure can harm a child’s health and brain development.

Children can be directly exposed to this hazard if they live in an older home that contains old lead-based paint, typically built before 1978. Lead-based paint can peel and crack into tiny pieces creating dust that children breath in or swallow.

Fortunately, lead exposure is preventable.

Chesterfield County’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program was created to protect children five years and younger and expectant mothers from lead exposure. In partnership with our non-profit partner, project:HOMES, families may qualify for a free lead hazard assessment and household repairs to remove lead exposure from their homes. No county staff will enter your home. This program has serviced several homes and is currently repairing others in Chesterfield that have lead-based paint.

If you’re a caregiver of younger children in an older home, you may also qualify for this program. For more information, please contact Emily Hurley by emailing [email protected] or calling 804-718-0517.
Chesterfield Offers Tax Exemption
for Rehabilitating Older Homes
Are you aware that Chesterfield County allows a partial real estate tax exemption for the rehabilitation, renovation, or replacement of older residential structures?

The goal of this program is to help protect and preserve our aging neighborhoods. Upon approval, the partial tax exemption will be in effect for 15 years and transfers with the real estate. The amount of the exemption is based solely on increased assessment value, not the amount spent on the improvement project. There is no application fee.
