Perhaps no area of North Kingstown has undergone more change in the past 100 years than Quonset Point. The development of the Quonset Naval Air Station and the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in the 1940s transformed the seaside landscape and exploded the population of the town.

In the 1920s, however, the people of North Kingstown could never have predicted the changes in store for the Quonset area. The land was still largely undeveloped and The H.V. Allen Estate Agency was just entering into the business of selling lots and houses to people looking to make Quonset their summer home. The library recently received a gift of a photo album and brochure which belonged to the H.V. Allen company. The photos in the album show both open tracts of Quonset land and newly constructed homes. It must be that this album was used by a salesman of the company to show off the area to prospective buyers.

Unfortunately, people only enjoyed their new beachside homes for a brief window in time as the Hurricane of 1938 completely devastated Quonset Point. Shortly after that, World War II began and the U.S. Navy saw Quonset as an ideal location for a base. The H.V. Allen Estate Agency album captures the glimmering optimism of a brief moment in time of the 1920
