August 2024 | Vol. #4 No. 3

Every Summer is a time of fun, but for Kiwanis also a time for service

(which we view as fun)—a quarterly food drive, the annual Street Fair, and preparation for the fall Pumpkin Patch. Of course there are weekly lunch/meetings at the Kiwanis YMCA Pavilion where we enjoy loving fellowship and a great meal from Jane.

Quarterly “Feed Wilton” Food Drives

Greeting customers at the Village Market and Stop & Shop in the blazing sun during the third weekend in June, Kiwanis members collected $10,625 in cash and gift cards for the Wilton Food Pantry to support our food insecure neighbors.

Led by President-elect Jerry Sprole, Kiwanis members and friends served. the community: Carol Boehly, David Gortz, David Sklar, Day Shields, Bill Mathews, Frank Mabley, Mike Safko, Mary Anne Franco, Whitney Janeway, Donna Peterson and Joe Fiteni. Many served multiple shifts with Mike Safko (pictured here) surviving four shifts!

Wilton Farmers Market

June through October

Visit the Farmers Market at the Wilton Town Center from June through October. Some of my favorites are Jeff’s tasty BBQ and Ambler Farm’s fresh-from-the farm produce.

July

The events highlighted here are either Kiwanis Club activities

or events by organizations Kiwanis supports.

July 4th

At the annual Democrat-Republican July 4th softball game, the GOP continued their streak of victories in a highly competitive and always entertaining 4-3 squeaker in the final inning. CT Congressman Jim Himes was a catcher for the Dems, shown here congratulating coach Joe Stravato, brought together by Kiwanian Jack McFadden.

led by Kiwanian Kevin Craw. We thank sponsors

Annual Street Fair

Thanks to Wilton CERT volunteers who keep us safe during community events like the July 4th fireworks and our Street Fair. It was a pleasure to take pictures in perfect weather amid a large vendor turnout.

At Kiwanis booth Kiwanians Colin Christ, Jack McFadden, and Mike Safko, Jeff Turner and Mary Anne Franco greet visitors with chips and a wide array of beverages.

Karen and Kiwanian/Selectman Ross Tartell with Pam Brown at the Wilton Congregational Church booth. Kiwanian Frank Mabley helps as cashier for the Wilton Library.

Kiwanian Bud Taylor

Cruises the Street Fair in his sick ride. Vroom!

Rotarian Father Reggie manages the popular inflatables while fellow Rotarians play cornhole as Paul 3P looks on. In the middle is Jarred Barnes, Wilton Rotary President and YMCA business development leader. Jarred is also the YMCA representative at Kiwanis.

Wilton’s political parties were well-represented by Dems former selectman Deb McFadden and Kiwanian and former DTC Leader John Kalamarides on the “left” and GOP Selectman Josh Cole and his wonderful, ever-present daughter on the “right.” In the middle are the Ms. Presidents leaders of tomorrow.

Painted Cookie Owner Susan Schmitt with friend, Patricia Terranova, and yummy cookies (how about a photographer’s discount?). Then Go Green Director Tammy Thornton and Christine Burns from Waveny/Visiting Nurses.

Wilton Library Director Caroline Mandler rests with fellow workers. But first Kiwanian Rudi and Karen Hoefling, and at end Wilton’s Chair of the Board of Education Ruth DeLuca and daughter.

In Loving Memory

Farewell Hans and Phil

Hans Sindel is remembered as a passionate Kiwanian, whether it’s raising donations for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission or playing the accordion at the memorable Oktoberfest events.

We will miss his engaging presence.

Han's Full Obit

Phil Richards exemplifies the best of Kiwanis in collaborating with other worthy Wilton nonprofits—the Wilton Arts Council, Ambler Farm, Wilton CERT, the Wilton Library, and the founding of Stay at Home.

Ray's Corner

Ray Moskow is one of the most indestructible people I know.

Every summer he goes to Maine to get some exercise.

Ray had an unfortunate fall and is healing in Maine. His wife Gail and daughters have rushed to his side to cheer him up. It’s working!!

Get on home to Wilton, Ray.
