A Note from Gary Alpert,

President of SRVEF Board of Directors

Dear Friends of the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation

This month, we have invited our Superintendent, Dr. John Malloy, to share important information on a topic that affects all of us: school funding. Whether you currently have a student in our public schools, will have a student in the future, or simply care about education, this affects you. We all benefit from quality schools and well-educated students.

The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation is working with SRVUSD leadership to help communicate this important message.

If you have any ideas on how SRVEF can help further support our schools, please share them with us at info@srvef.org.

Have a great summer and look for more information from us in the coming months.

Gary Alpert

President

San Ramon Valley Education Foundation

San Ramon Valley Unified School District is excited to announce the launch of its new “Access to Excellence” community engagement initiative.

SRVUSD is ready to re-engage with the San Ramon Valley community and reconnect with the sense of pride we all have in our schools. Our tagline for this initiative is “Success Reimagined,” which builds upon the district’s Strategic Directions - a foundation of academic excellence where all students thrive and succeed in innovative and inclusive learning environments. Reimagining success means that both now and, in the future, our students will:

  • achieve in academics and gain social and emotional health;
  • engage in opportunities to think, create, and solve real-life problems, and understand who they are and the importance of giving back;
  • be curious, confident and independent;
  • have access to the best education and brightest future possible.

Access to Excellence is not only about engagement, but about advocacy. We know we need to provide the best opportunities and learning conditions for all of our students. We know what we want to provide, and what we should provide; but we also know there are gaps in the funding. In recent weeks SRVUSD’s Board of Education Members, with tremendous support from the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs, have been going out into the community to share information about how we need to raise the base for the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). However, the LCFF has not kept pace with the massive growth in fixed costs for programs, services, and personnel that are funded from the base grant. SRVUSD needs a higher base grant so we can focus on accelerating student learning and recovery after the pandemic and empowering all students to reach their full potential.

Finally, Access to Excellence is also about fundraising, and our partnership with the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF). As we head into next school year, we will be focusing more on this part of the initiative. Right now, we want to celebrate what our schools mean to our community, as well as providing opportunities for members of our community to support and partner with us. You will start to see banners and messages throughout the San Ramon Valley as a reminder of what we are about, how the entire community benefits from great schools, and that “Success Reimagined” happens when communities are actively engaged.

Take Care,

-John

Thank you SRVEF Affiliates!

After two stressful years of COVID isolation, our 35 Affiliate leaders convened in person with the SRVEF Board at an outdoor event to meet each other and the District Superintendent, John Malloy. Donning masks, we kicked off the 2021-22 school year filled with hope and promise that life would soon be back to normal. And we are almost there.

Our Affiliates continually impress us. Throughout the year, these dedicated volunteers work diligently with their parent community, teachers, and principals to identify priorities and raise funds for students’ needs at their school sites. Affiliates' efforts have greatly supported their staff and students’ smooth transition from virtual learning to in-person classroom learning this year. From personnel, materials, supplies, and experiences for the students, these much-needed funds have provided resources and programs that have enhanced our students’ education.

In April, at our annual celebration dinner, we recognized not only a “Shining Star” from each school but celebrated the incredible work of all our affiliates. As the year comes to an end we say goodbye and thank our 2021-22 Affiliate Board members.

But the work doesn’t stop. We are already preparing for the 2022-23 school year. Throughout May SRVEF is conducting training for the new Affiliate Boards on topics such as Board member responsibilities, fiscal and legal requirements, document and nonprofit compliance, corporate matching funds, running effective meetings, and more.

SRVEF appreciates everything our Affiliate members do for their schools. These creative, talented, and committed individuals continue to enrich the lives of the students and contribute to the excellence in our schools...we thank them!

Alumni Corner

When I was a student at San Ramon Valley High School, like most of my peers I had good days and bad. But every time I walked into Mr. Abrams’ choir class, I knew that for 60 minutes I would be at peace. A highlight was the annual winter concert and performing the song “Hallelujah” for our families and friends. Even after graduation, Mr. Abrams would invite us alumni back and call us up to sing

Hallelujah…

Years later, when my husband and I were deciding where in the Bay Area to settle down and raise our family, the San Ramon Valley was our number one choice. Not only was it close to family, but the school district was one of the best in the area and ultimately the top driver of our decision to buy our house in San Ramon. Having grown up in the district I knew firsthand the quality of the education and involvement of the community.

Education and children and the causes that surround them have always been important to me. When the opportunity arose to be part of the SRVEF and join the board, I jumped at it. I got involved because I wanted to give back to the school district that gave both myself and my children a best-in-class education. Due to the cuts in education and the funding index, many of the enrichment programs like music, science, theatre, and culinary arts that I was able to take advantage of in-school and through after-school enrichment programs were no longer being offered. By contributing my time and money to the SRVEF, I am assured that my donations serve my children and all children of this community no matter what grade or school they are at. Furthermore, I am able to be a part of much-loved community traditions such as the Run for Education that I enjoyed in my youth, and enjoy sharing and passing down those memories to my sons.

As an alumnus of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, it is important for me to acknowledge and give back to those organizations that helped shape me into the person I am today. Being at a point in life and my career where I have both the means and time to donate back, it was a no-brainer to get involved with SRVEF. While I chose to join the board, there are many other ways you can help. Like volunteering or running in the Run for Education, gifting a tax-deductible donation, or attending one of the SRVEF’s annual events like “Celebrate Innovation in Education.” There are so many ways you can help support the Foundation and ensure that the programs and events continue to be available for all of those in the SRVUSD. Hallelujah.
