2023 Affiliates hit the ground running

Our 35 school affiliates are busy planning for another school year.

Each school has its own Ed Fund/Academic Boosters that raises funds by collecting donations, searching for matching funds from employers and holding events and programs – all with the common goal of helping their local school achieve greatness. Each operates independently, working closely with their local school administrators to prioritize what will best serve their individual school needs.

The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation, as the umbrella organization for our school Affiliates, provides advice, training, and support to each of them. Each of our Board Members serves as a liaison to two or more schools attends meetings, and shares information. SRVEF hosts monthly affiliate meetings where we bring guest speakers, provide time to collaborate, and conduct training sessions.

On Monday, August 28th we kicked off the new year with an in-person Affiliate meeting at the Professional Development Center, located at Los Cerros Middle School. Superintendent, Dr. Malloy, and Board Trustees Rachel Hurd and Shelley Clark joined us to provide updates for the coming year. We also shared updates on SRVEF, provided a bit of training, and had a chance to meet and share how the new year was going with each other.

We had a full house, and are all excited for a wonderful 2023-2024 school year.

Teacher Grants

One of the ways we support our educators is through our Teacher Grant Program. Teacher grants are funded from the funds we raise from the Run for Education and donations made to the Major Gifts and Endowment fund.

We will begin reviewing teacher grants submitted beginning October 1 and will continue funding grants until we use up all our funds. We typically wrap up our grant program by early November.

Once again, we are partnering with DonorsChoose.org, a non-profit organization that connects public school educators in need of classroom materials, supplies, and experiences with donors throughout the country.

In the past we have funded tens of thousands of dollars in grants, making a difference to hundreds of classrooms, and impacting the learning of thousands of our students.

You can help too! Visit DonorsChoose.org and search for grants that are of special interest to you. You can search by subject, school, teacher, or school district.

Have any ideas? Please share them by contacting us at info@SRVEF.org

With gratitude,

Calling 5th Graders!

Science Alliance is an after-school program available in all SRVUSD high schools created to pair curious and motivated 5th-grade students (buddies) with high school students (mentors).

Mentors encourage and guide their buddies on a journey of science and methodical inquiry under the guidance of a credentialed teacher at one of the high schools.

The year-long journey includes six buddy-mentor meetings, interesting lessons, and learning opportunities. The program concludes with a district-wide Science Fair to be held on April 13, 2024, where buddies share the project that they worked on throughout the program. The program has been widely recognized as helping to prepare the 5th graders for middle school lab science and teaches positive role-modeling skills to high school mentors.

You are invited to attend a parent meeting to learn more about Science Alliance for the 2023-2024 school year. Parent meetings will be held in person on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at 7 pm at each of these high schools:

  • California High School - Library
  • Dougherty Valley High School - Library
  • Monte Vista High School - WSC 118
  • San Ramon Valley High School - Commons

We recommend you attend the meeting at the high school your 5th grader will likely attend in the future. This meeting attendance is mandatory if you want your student to participate in the Science Alliance program. The meeting is intended for parents only; students are not required to attend.

Program registration will open for all students on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 7 pm. Information on how to register will be provided at the parent meeting on September 12.

San Ramon Valley Unified School District

SRVUSD is one of the highest performing school districts in the nation, with more National Blue Ribbon schools last school year than any other district in the State or nation. Our award-winning schools are funded through a combination of local funding measures, State funds, and donations. Because the local community has historically approved local funding measures, local students have had access to programs above and beyond what State funding can provide on its own.

However, the District faces two reductions in available school funding in the near future. First, in 2025 a local voter-approved funding measure will expire. Second, over the next two years, the District will have exhausted $6 million in State funds that have been supporting our schools.

The loss of $6.8 million from expiring parcel tax funding, will require the District to layoff approximately 56 educators. This along with the expiration of $6 million in State Funds will impact core academic programs, student mental health services, and support for students who are learning at different levels.

To address the loss of these funds, the Board of Trustees of SRVUSD is considering placing two measures on the ballot. The first measure would renew the expiring parcel tax funding, at the current rate of $144 per parcel, per year. The second measure would address the loss of State funding, at the rate of $98 per parcel, per year.

Teen Stress. It's Real.

SRVUSD is one of the many community co-sponsors of this free event being put on by the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce Fund, in partnership with Three Valleys Community Foundation. Teens can get stressed by a number of factors - anxiety over test-taking, worry about excelling in sports, social media, bullying, or peer pressure.

Join us for an interactive forum in SRVUSD's Boardrooms where we will conduct role playing exercises to help you see clearly how to handle tough situations with your teens. A youth panel representative of SRVUSD's high schools will also educate the community about the anxiety and stress our teens face and how to better cope with difficult situations. There's even an interactive exercise with the Town of Danville Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate you'll enjoy! Register today - space is limited!

Town Halls and Community Survey for Long-Range Facilities Development Plan

Your participation is needed! Our Town Hall series of meetings are open to all members of the community and serve as an opportunity to view and provide feedback on the proposed long-range plan recommendation drafts for individual school sites. Please see more details on the specific flyer for the date you plan to attend. We also want to remind you that the community survey is open now through September 15th.

Your voice matters! It only takes 15 minutes to complete the Facilities Planning Survey that we sent out by email earlier this week. The deadline is September 15th. Your responses are confidential and will be used anonymously to share findings. All SRVUSD 4th-12th graders will also be invited to take a similar survey and answer questions that will help us better understand their needs and interests to inform the long-range plans and future school facilities improvements.

SRVUSD Parcel Tax Oversight Committee

San Ramon Valley Unified School District is seeking members for its Parcel Tax Oversight Committee.

The nine member (plus one alternate) committee provides oversight for the Board of Education to ensure that the funds are spent as intended by the voters of the parcel tax. The committee meets at least twice per year and reports on an annual basis to the Board and community on how the funds have been spent. All meetings are open to the public.

Currently there are openings for three member positions and one alternate to be appointed by the Board of Education at their regular meeting on October 10, 2023. Parcel Tax committee members serve a two-year term. They cannot be compensated and cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. Members must reside within the boundaries of the SRVUSD and must be registered voters. SRVUSD employees or officials of the district, as well as vendors, contractors and consultants are not eligible to serve as members.

Applications are available on our Parcel Tax Committee webpage. The deadline for submitting the application is 3:00 p.m. on September 11, 2023. For additional information, please contact Sandra Corsetti in the Business Office, at scorsetti@srvusd.net.
