Scripture Readings for January 11, 2026
In the waters of the Jordan, Jesus is revealed as the beloved Son of God. Through this great epiphany, Jesus fulfills all righteousness and becomes the servant of God who will bring forth justice and be a light to the nations. In the waters of baptism we too are washed by the Word, anointed by the Spirit, and named God’s beloved children. Our baptismal mission is to proclaim good news to all who are oppressed or in need of God’s healing.
Isaiah 42:1-9; Psalm 29; Acts 10:34-43; Matthew 3:13-17

Grace and peace to you,
This past fall as the new confirmation class and mentors were working our way through Martin Luther’s small catechism, as a group we agreed that possibly the hardest thing that we are called to do as individuals and as Christians is confession and forgiveness.
Reconciliation is at the heart of our theology and our faith. There are only two sacraments in the Lutheran church, baptism and communion, and forgiveness is at the heart of both of them. Several other components of our weekly worship service address forgiveness: the confession and forgiveness at the beginning of worship, the Lord’s Prayer, and passing of the peace.
Conflict is such a basic part of our human experience – in all realms of life. Even our experience as church is not exempt from conflict. And yet confession and forgiveness is not often the way that we as humans tend to address disagreements.
I learned this fall in my continuing education study of anxiety that conflict is one way that systems work to resolve anxiety. It is a natural way to move through challenges to resolution. However, the other strategies of dealing with anxiety seem to be more often used: distance and triangulation (venting). When we experience conflict, it is so much easier to ignore the existence of the situation, avoid the people we are in conflict with, and/or to share challenges with third parties outside the conflict. And if none of those work, we are often prone as humans to cut off of relationships rather than deal with the uncomfortable, painful and extremely vulnerable process of confession and forgiveness. Examples of confession and forgiveness around us are so rare that I wonder if we don’t even open our hearts to hope that they can ever take place.
I fully admit that as a people pleaser, one of my biggest growing edges is dealing with conflict, both as an individual and as a leader. Conflict feels like rejection, and in opening myself to confession and forgiveness there is the chance that the resolution will fail, and that I will have to feel the deep pain of rejection all over again.
In our life together as a congregation I have seen triangulation and I have seen distance, and if I am honest, I have participated in them myself.
But I have also seen confession and forgiveness. My heart is so deeply grateful to you to witness your tremendous courage, trust in God, and a deeper calling from the holy spirit to ministry in this place that empowers you to engage in the uncomfortable, painful and extremely vulnerable process of confession and forgiveness.
It is an incredible gift to witness what God can do in and through you. It is at the top of my list of miraculous things I give thanks for in our life together as church. Because of you I can see the ripples of healing and new life and ministry that spread out from the heart of confession and forgiveness. You give me courage and hope to do the same in my life, to face uncomfortable, painful and extremely vulnerable conflicts with tremendous courage, trust in God, and a deeper calling from the holy spirit.
Thank you for the gift of witnessing the holy spirit moving in you and in the ministry of this place.
God’s peace,
Pastor Amanda
