Second Sunday in Lent
March 1, 2026

Paraments color: PURPLE
Scripture Readings for March 1, 2026
Jesus says he did not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill it. Jesus raises the bar on God's call in the ten commandments and gives us all opportunities to grow in our understanding of what it looks like to be people of faith.
Genesis 12:1-4a; Psalm 121; Romans 4:1-5, 13-17; Matthew 5:21-28

Grace and peace to you,
This Lent each Wednesday night we will explore a different scripture about bread. Tonight we will look at John 6:25-40, I am the bread of life.
This is the first “I Am” saying in John’s gospel. The “I Am” sayings are unique to the fourth gospel and serve to more explicitly manifest Jesus as the savior. In response to their request for an extraordinary sign, Jesus uses the metaphor of bread—an ordinary food.
Bread was a staple food for Jews and non-Jews alike in the ancient Middle East and Mediterranean world. In John’s gospel, Jesus understands what it is like to be hungry. John 6 begins with him feeding the five thousand, and in this passage, Jesus recalls the time when God fed the Israelites with manna when they were in the wilderness. This metaphor is intentionally chosen; Jesus is not a luxurious feast reserved for the few but a humble loaf of bread that nourishes the many. As the bread of life, Jesus nourishes people both spiritually and physically.
Looking forward to exploring this text with you tonight! Prayers at the beginning of your Lenten journey.
God’s peace,
Pastor Amanda

This Lent each day we are invited to give thanks for blessings God gives us and remember in prayer those who are in need. Find a daily "Count Your Blessings" Lenten handout in the Narthex or click picture to download.
At the end of Lent you can either make a contribution to Hutto Lutheran marked “Count Your Blessings” offering, or pray about and give the funds to who you feel God is calling you bless. Those funds gathered through HLC will go towards a new electric convection oven to enable us to cook more food for Feeding of the 5000.
