Holy Trinity

Scripture Readings for May 31, 2026
Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.
Genesis 1:1—2:4a; Psalm 8; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; Matthew 28:16-20

Grace and peace to you,
“Pride” is famously one of the seven deadly sins in Christian theology. Humility is an attribute that is held in high esteem by many. And yet we know what it is like to be a parent or teacher filled with pride for our children’s accomplishments. We know personally the love and affirmation that God had for Jesus on the day of his baptism when he said, “this is my child, my beloved, with you I am well pleased.” This same love is the love that God has for us.
It is this type of pride that I have witnessed throughout the month of June, pride that invokes something very close to the biblical idea of SHALOM. Shalom often gets translated in English as “peace” and that is definitely a part of the meaning, but bigger: shalom-peace is a comprehensive peace in the sense of things being as they should be. Shalom is about wholeness. It is about the beautiful, diverse complexity of God’s design being seen and valued. I believe shalom is the deeper meaning behind pride month. It is the peace that comes from being deeply loved – even and especially by people who have too often been told, in other contexts, to hide parts of themselves or to be ashamed of their identity – the peace of being valued for all of who you are.
One of the things I love so much about Hutto Lutheran is that there is space for a diversity of people to come together in ways that do not often happen in our world today, as one body in Christ, sent in faith to share the love of Christ through worship, service, fellowship and witness, we live into God’s shalom for all the world. As we make space for each other in the body of Christ, we are allies for one another and reflections of the profound love that God has for us and we also live into Hutto Lutheran’s welcome statement.
As I look at each and every one of you, I am filled with deep love and pride for the amazing person God created you to be!
God’s peace,
Pastor Amanda
