Scripture Readings for Sunday

Pentecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God’s presence within and among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame, bringing God’s presence to all people. Paul reminds us that though we each have different capacities, we are unified in the Spirit that equips us with these gifts. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples, empowering them to forgive sin. We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim God’s redeeming love to all the world.

Acts 2:1-21, Psalm 104:24-34, 35b; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13; John 20:19-23

From the Pastor's Desk

Grace and peace to you!

What do you think of when you think of the church? Is the church the building? The people? An institution? A denomination?

This Sunday on Pentecost we celebrate the day the church began. The church began with a few people, no buildings, no money, and no structure.

But what they had was more than enough. What did they have?

They had their faith in God, passed down in the Jewish tradition.

They had three years learning from Jesus what the Kingdom of God was all about.

Most importantly they had the Holy Spirit that was sent to them at Pentecost.

In our Lutheran tradition we say that the Holy Spirit “calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.” We do not have to know all the answers, but God has given us all that we need.

Gracious God, as we go through change in our personal lives, in our communities, and as a church, may we have the eyes to see the Holy Spirit both walking alongside us and leading the way.

God’s peace,

Pastor Amanda
