Scripture Readings for October 27, 2024
Can we pray the way Bartimaeus prays? People try to hush him up because by addressing Jesus as “Son of David” he is making a politically dangerous claim that Jesus is the rightful king. Could our prayers ever be heard as a threat to unjust powers that be? Bartimaeus won’t give up or go away quietly, but repeats his call for help more loudly. Do we ask so boldly? And are our prayers an honest answer to Jesus’ question, “What do you want me to do for you?”
Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 46; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36

From the Pastor's Desk
Grace and peace be to you!
Next Sunday, November 3rd, the church will gather and celebrate All Saints Sunday. You are invited to light candles during worship for those who have died.
All Saints' Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the Christian Church. It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who had died for the faith, and it has since become a day when we honor and remember those who have died and are in heaven as well as the faithful saints of the present. Martin Luther held that all Christians are simultaneously sinner and saint--a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint because of salvation in Jesus.
This time of year is also a time when we think of Dia De Los Muertos. The Mexican Day of the Dead invites family and friends to gather to remember those who have died. Grandchildren come to know grandparents and great grandparents they have never met through the telling of their stories that live on even in death.
In Sweden in the year 731 AD, 1 November was designated a day of remembrance for saints of the church who had no days of their own. In recent years, people in Sweden began putting lighted candles on the graves of the departed on All Saints’ Day. The countless points of light from the candles and lanterns placed on graves form beautiful patterns in the snow. People also lay flowers and wreaths on graves.
This year you are invited to gather at the historic Hutto Lutheran Cemetery at 6:30pm on November 1st. Like those first Swedish immigrants to Hutto we will be gathering around a fire (or a back up burnban safe option), singing together and placing candles on the graves to give thanks for the saints.
Hope to see you this Friday and Sunday! Giving thanks for you living saints too.
God’s peace,
Pastor Amanda
