In Search of Stillness

Greetings!

Summer holidays are here. For those who are traveling, happy and safe travels! And for those in town, we have new workshops coming up in July and August, including The Enneagram and The Work of Byron Katie with visiting facilitator Tim McLean. For those who want an intro or to brush up on their Enneagram knowledge, Siewfan will be holding a third DeepDive Enneagram Workshop 27 - 29 July.

Did you miss Syv's Full Body Awakening series? She is holding one more session 10 July, before she's off on her travels...and she will be back this fall to continue this truly fantastic workshop.

If you enjoy essential oils and Antoinette's beautiful Tibetan bowl meditations, you would love the Sensory Meditation this August, being facilitated by both Claudia and Antoinette. The last such meditation was truly profound and with the combination of oils and toning, everyone found a deeper place.

To experience the healing powers of essential oils, join Claudia on her Essential Oil Discovery Workshop.

Also new to Gallery Helios is Access BARS. Come find out what's possible.

Are you looking to anchor your meditation practice or delve deeper into kundalini yoga? Our Tuesday meditation nights continue and Adam's Friday Kundalini yoga series is on until 31 August.

Check out all the happenings at Gallery Helios this July and August.

Editor's Note

In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true. - Buddha

Our mind is powerful in both its analytical logical capabilities and the creative genius the world has seen. And yet we only use a small fraction of our resources.  Imagine the possibilities when we learn to tap into more, or when we release ourselves from the traps our mind has set!

In the next two months, we have some very interesting workshops, to see how we can work with or release our beliefs, to enter a greater state of grace and understanding. Sometimes this is through letting go with movement or turning the way we have been seeing "the truth" on its head or simply dislodging the charge of these beliefs and start asking questions.

As they say, all roads lead to Rome... and may we all find our own path.

Main Central
Connecting us to Abundance

Key to Abundance
In Traditional Chinese Medicine and some other eastern philosophies, energy is seen as circulating through the body. One of the major pathways is down the front and up the back, in a continuous cycle.

With this path, tensions above and below the waistline can be released. The key is the breath. Exhale. Release. Inhale. Receive. Balance. And that's one of the secrets to abundance. We have to release to have the space to receive. We have to let go to allow abundance to enter our lives. And we must remember to receive.

Join Antoinette Biehlmeier in her Finger Yoga 4 : 10 Steps to Abundance 14 July to see how you can connect to abundance through finger poses and the breath.

Finger Yoga 1 - 4 is a series of mudra workshops that Antoinette facilitates. Each workshop can be standalone and completion of Finger 1 - 3 is not required to participate in Yoga 4.

Communications at Work
A Look Through the Lens of the Enneagram
by Faya Alhabshi

Earlier this year I attended a two-day Enneagram workshop facilitated by Siewfan. I remember thinking how I would have dealt with two specific workplace scenarios had I known about the Enneagram.

Scenario 1: Dealing with a Bossy Supervisor

I was working with a bossy supervisor who irritated me constantly. I asked him why he was acting this way and he responded that he was worried about being seen as unproductive and unreliable. He therefore controlled me to make sure that I do work exactly as he directed. According to him, my efficiency would give him a promotion, or at least recognition.

Knowing this, however, did not help me much. I ended up being so annoyed by his behavior pattern that I left the job.

The Enneagram, I believe, would have brought me into a deeper inquiry, beyond the simple why. I would have understood his Basic Fear and Basic Desire according to his personality type. Instead of focusing on how he was making me feel, I could have reassured him with more feedback. The Enneagram would have kept me from letting others make me feel unworthy.

Knowing that Type 1s have a fear of their own anger, I might have helped him to see the ways in which he was being hurtful. I would have known to choose a gentle way, without wronging him.

Scenario 2: Dealing with an Envious Ex-Colleague

I used to feel angry and upset with an ex-colleague who seemed to regard my whole existence as a threat to her success. She seemed to regard any tasks I accomplished as an effort to undermine her.

Just as with my previous supervisor, I would have been able to understand her better with the Enneagram. Knowing that Type 3s may become angry when their "success" is undermined, I would have found time to discuss issues with her and help her know that I was not a threat, so she could feel more comfortable and safe.

The Enneagram has also helped me understand why I was affected by their behaviors in the first place. Having identified my dominant personality type, I now understand how my own Basic Fear and Basic Desire reacted to the behavior of other people. Understanding others is a way for me to understand myself even more deeply.  Eventually, all our runaway thoughts about others would turn out to be false statements invented through our own paradigm of fears.

BARS
ACCESS Bars

Our brain is an amazing and sophisticated piece of machinery - a computer, really and it has in storage an astonishingly massive amount of information.

Like a computer that runs on programs, we direct our lives based on beliefs, conscious or not. Over time, like computer programs, our beliefs can become outdated and are no longer aligned with what we want in life.

Deleting these beliefs, however, is not as easy as it is with programs, putting them in that trash bin at the bottom of the screen. Removing these unwanted beliefs, however, is essential to our well-being and growth. And yes, happiness. It frees up space for us to create a greater reality and live with joy, ease and glory.

What if there is a way to discharge unnecessary and unhelpful beliefs? Would you try it?

This is what Access BARS does.

Hydrating Your Body
Healthy Living

HydrationFeeling thirsty? Then you are already dehydrated.

Feeling hungry? Then you could be dehydrated!

A tidbit I picked up from the Oprah show years ago is that we often mistaken thirst for hunger. Dehydration causes lethargy and our body receives mixed signals, and we think we need food for energy. So before you start munching on something, have a glass of water first.

"Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions" - Mayo Clinic

Our body is approximately 70% water. But did you know that body fat contains 10% water, bone 22%, brain 70%, and lungs nearly 90%?

Water is undoubtedly an essential element in life and living. It is needed for the proper functioning of our entire body. But with our busy lives, sometimes we simply forget to replenish this elixir of life. What's also confusing is the mind-boggling number of drinks available on the market. We may be constantly consuming Starbucks latte or soda or juice or even sports water BUT it is not water. Our body needs pure honest water and caffeinated drinks actually cause dehydration.

How much water do we need?

The conventional wisdom is 8 glasses (that's an 8oz glass). This is a good guideline but the actual amount required is affected by factors like activity, climate, diet and medical conditions (such as diabetes and being on medicines like antihistamines). So we need to compensate for extra fluid loss, in addition to what's lost to routine functions such as breathing, sweating and elimination.

By the time we feel thirsty, we are already dehydrated. Our body allocates fluid to different parts at the onset, as dehydration progresses from mild to severe. Symptoms of mild dehydration are headaches and dizziness while those of severe dehydration include unconsciousness, delirium, increased heart rate, low blood pressure and a lack of sweating.

Start the morning with two glasses of water! And always hydrate yourself before any sweat-inducing activity for better performance.

Tips

  • If you don't like the taste of water, add lemon, lime or mint.
  • If you keep forgetting, set an alarm.
  • Keep a water bottle at your work station, always filled.
  • Alternate your non-water drinks with water.
  • Water retention? When the body is hydrated, it releases excess water.
