VBS Project Workday Volunteers Needed

May Youth Activities

  • May 15 - Outdoor game night from 5-6 p.m. 
  • May 22 - Confirmation Sunday & Graduation Sunday: Seniors will be honored in both the 9:01 and the 11 a.m. services. We will head to Camp Ahistadi for baptisms and an afternoon of games and celebration. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m. with the baptisms to follow. 
Family Fun Night at Steele Creek Park

Church Nursery Worker - State Street UMC is seeking 2 Nursery Workers. Qualifications include a love for God and God's children, experience caring for infants and preschoolers, and a minimum age of 16. Previous experience in child care preferred. Background check required. Compensation is $12 per hour. Available shifts include: Sunday mornings from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Wednesday evenings from 5:15 - 7:45 p.m. & Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. plus occasional Monday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. For more information, email Cheri Zaras at or call the Church Office at (276) 669-2101. 
OAK Luncheon

OAK (Older Adult Kouncil) is finally on the road again! This month we are traveling to the Harvest Table Restaurant in Meadowview , VA on Thursday, May 26. Feel free to bring guests or prospective members. Sign-up sheets are on the clipboard on Sunday mornings or outside the Parish Nurse office (Rm #102). We will be providing transportation with the handicap bus with a 15 passenger capacity. Additional transportation will be provided if needed. OAK is a group of adults who enjoy a time of fellowship and lunch throughout the year. It is an opportunity to join in safe and accessible functions that all can participate. We are eager to find new and interesting locations as we visit some of our old favorites. Please stop by and pick up a new calendar for the rest of 2022. Craft Group Thursdays 6 - 7 p.m.
in the Library

Every Thursday our craft group meets from 6 - 7 p.m. in the Library. We are currently doing crochet but will switch to something different each month. All you need to bring is a size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook and a skein of yarn.  All ages are welcome. If you’ve given up on your love for crochet and knitting, but have yarn or needles you would like to donate, please leave them in the donation box labeled "Crafting Group" in front of the Church Office. Please contact Shannon Love if you are interested in attending at (423) 646-1077 or
Annual Conference Hands-On Mission Project
Deadline for Completed Kits Sunday, May 15

Churches of the Clinch Mountain District are putting together 400 "Mission School Kits" to be sent to the United Methodist mission in Liberia. Last year SSUMC provided 32 kits. There is a collection box in the Narthex where you can drop off your completed kits by this Sunday, May 15. If you are unable to shop, but still want to help, send (or drop off) a donation to the church, noting "mission kits" on your check. We have a team of volunteers to shop and pack as many kits as donations allow. SSUMC will deliver the completed kits to the District Office next Thursday, May 24.

We are excited to announce a monthly Men's Prayer Breakfast and meeting on the first Tuesday each month! Sunday Worship In-Person & Online

SSUMC offers opportunities for worship on Sunday mornings with three different spaces and flavors:

+ 8:45 a.m. in the Chapel – Informal service with traditional hymns.

+ 9:01 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall – Modern service with music led by the Praise Band.

+ 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary – Traditional service with choir and organ.

Godly Play (a worship experience for ages 4 - 5th grade) is offered during 9:01 service.

Exciting updates will take place this summer in the preschool wing of SSUMC. Spring Garden Preschool received a grant which will cover the cost and labor for new floors and painting in all the classrooms and restrooms on the ground floor of the children’s wing. Church Council approved these improvements. These rooms are also used by State Street UMC children’s programming including church nursery, etc. Please help stock those rooms with new equipment and learning tools.
