Dear Collector,

We are pleased to present an expressive Veracruz Sonriente figure from the Gulf coast of Mexico, Ca. 600 to 800 AD. Seated wide‑legged and holding a rattle, he flashes a toothy smile and wears a beaded pendant necklace, disc ear ornaments, and shell ankle bracelets.

Published in Ceremonial Sculpture of Ancient Veracruz, Hillwood Art Gallery, Long Island University (curated by Dr. Marilyn M. Goldstein), this figure appeared as no. 84 and still bears the original “Kerr 27” collection label. From the celebrated New York collection of Justin and Barbara Kerr—pioneers of rollout photography and the landmark Maya Vase corpus and mayavase.com— he shares in a legacy that transformed how scholars and museums study Mesoamerican imagery.
