Flexing for the Future

Flexing for the Future: Learning, Support, and Growth at Lincoln Middle School

One of the most powerful things we can do as a school district is give students time that is personalized to their needs. Every student learns differently, and having structured time in the day for extra help, skill-building, or exploring new interests helps ensure that all students can grow, achieve, and take ownership of their learning.

We have many wonderful examples of this happening around the district, but today we are proud to share more about Flex at Lincoln Middle School, and kicking off this year, starting at Cottage Grove High School!

What is Flex Time?

Flex Time is a built-in period during the school day where students have the opportunity to:

  • Get extra support in core subjects like math, language arts, science, etc.
  • Meet with teachers for additional instruction, interventions or extensions, or test make-ups
  • Spend time catching up on assignments or projects
  • Explore electives and enrichment opportunities

Why It Matters:

Flex Time allows students to take ownership of their learning. Whether they need support to strengthen understanding, a quiet place to complete work, or a chance to dig deeper into electives, this time is designed to meet them where they are. When students were asked about Flex, we heard that “it motivates me to keep up on my work so I can pick what I want to do” and when students were asked about being called in for subject support, one student said, “I’d rather be called in for Flex than fail.” This individualized support structure is built for all students and their needs, creating an environment for each student and their learning.

How It Works at LMS:

  • Students sign up for free flex with teachers/electives or students are “called in” to a class for extra time or help using the My Flex Learning program. AND PARENTS- you can also get access to your child’s Flex information and options to help them pick or see what they are doing at school. It’s a great collaborative opportunity with your child.
  • Teachers use Flex to offer targeted help in content areas or essential learning standards.
  • Elective/enrichment opportunities may include physical activities, music, art, crafts, extended learning opportunities, trivia, study hall time or social experiences.

Looking Ahead:

We are excited to see how Flex supports students this year and helps them build habits of independence, responsibility, and curiosity. The model is proving successful, even drawing attention from other area middle schools. The middle school years can be challenging as students learn to shift from elementary to secondary school with multiple teachers, and we know that the middle school years can be challenging in general, but this is also a wonderful time in life to help students navigate these challenges, learn and persevere, and with Flex we can do this as a team, working with each student individually.

There is a lot of great work happening around South Lane School District, and Lincoln Middle School’s support of individualized learning and support is a wonderful example! Thank you for your partnership as we continue to provide opportunities that empower learning, ensure belonging, and prepare every student to graduate college or career ready.
