Draft Futures 2040 MTP Released and Comments being Solicited
The draft Futures 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) was released on December 19, 2014. The Plan can be downloaded on the MRCOG website. Comments on the plan are being accepted through January 30 and can be sent via email to or by mail to Tara Cok, 809 Copper Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

Futures 2040 examines transportation and other challenges the region will face over the next 25 years, identifies the transportation investments that have been proposed in the planning horizon, and presents strategies for addressing those challenges.

The Plan update includes several new elements including the findings from a major scenario planning effort that examined the multiple ways the region could grow and the impacts of those growth patterns, and a new roadway design guidance document (the Long-Range Transportation System Guide, or LRTS) that bases recommendations on land use context and the role the facility plays in the regional transportation system.

An article about the Plan was recently featured in Albuquerque Business First.

Update on Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART)
Median simulation from ART project plans,

Improving transportation options is a vital component of the MTP's Preferred Scenario and for improving the metro area's quality of life and generating economic development opportunities. In cities like Cleveland, Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake, and Charlotte, transit-oriented development (TOD) has been useful in attracting direct investment and in growing locally-owned businesses, providing jobs, and increasing employment and sales tax revenues. In previous years, the City of Albuquerque evaluated other transit options to spur economic development, but like other cities, determined that trolleys and light rail were not cost-effective compared to bus rapid transit. Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) has been proposed as a way to improve the on-time performance of bus service, make trip times shorter and spur economic development along Albuquerque's Central Avenue corridor. After a round of public meetings, work on the project continues. For more information and to see proposed project plans for ART, visit
