Temple Israel’s Electronic Bulletin

E-Shalom

JANUARY 2025

Tevet-Shevat 5785

“Shalom, Welcome to Temple Israel....” is a phrase taught to us by Carole Lachman, a beloved, long-time congregant and bulletin editor who died in 2002. We named our bulletin in her honor and worked to realize her vision of Temple Israel as a community that welcomes the stranger and lets no one stand alone. This new version of the bulletin maintains our tradition of communicating with our Temple Israel family and continues to forward Carole’s vision, love and devotion for our synagogue.

Winter, as everyone knows, is cold and flu season. When people get sick, often the first thing they think of is chicken soup. In the Jewish community, using chicken soup to address illness is so common that comedians often refer to chicken soup as “Jewish penicillin.” Everyone has their own favorite recipe, with or without kneidlach (matzah balls), either clear or with some favorite vegetables, and with chicken or just its broth. However, we make it, the association between the Jewish people and chicken soup is firmly fixed in our minds and in the minds of the rest of the world.

Did you know, however, that chicken soup came to us, not from the ancient land of Israel but from early China? According to food historian and columnist, Joan Nathan (sometimes called the Jewish ‘Julia Child’), chicken soup predates Judaism by thousands of years. According to her, chickens were the first domesticated in China between 10,000 and 7,000 years ago.  It was there, she adds, that chicken soup probably began as a chicken immersed in cold water in a clay pot and placed over hot coals.

From China, the soup spread westward, gaining devotees as people shared recipes and tried it themselves. The first historical reference to chicken soup comes from a Greek army surgeon in the first century C.E. who discusses the healthy properties of the soup in a treatise on ancient medicine. Later, in the 12th century, the Jewish doctor and scholar Maimonides (also known as the Rambam) wrote a book on the causes of symptoms of illness in which he recommended chicken soup as a potent remedy for a whole host of sicknesses. According to the Rambam, chicken soup helped with fevers, coughs, depression and leprosy. The soup was, in his opinion, even a cure for the common cold! The Rambam’s recommendation nearly a thousand years ago may explain, at least in part, why chicken soup is today one of the most iconic of all Jewish foods.

Today, you can find many different recipes for Jewish chicken soup. From the classic Ashkenazi soup made with water, chicken, onions, carrots, celery, dill, parsley, and an occasional parsnip, to Yemenite chicken soup made with turmeric, chili peppers, fenugreek, dill, parsley and cilantro to Persian abgoosht made with cardamom, bell peppers and chickpea dumplings. Each Jewish community has its own common version, and each family has its own favorite variations. No matter how we make chicken soup, this is the season for enjoying a hot bowl of chicken soup, even if (or especially because) you’re feeling under the weather and chicken soup is just what the doctor ordered (Even if he lived almost a thousand years ago)!

A Message from the Co-Presidents

Bryn Biren

Russell Kaminsky

We have just completed another year at Temple Israel that was filled with many, many religious, educational and just enjoyable activities. Before last year’s calendar meeting, we had discussed cutting back, not offering so many events.  We felt that there were too many offerings and that some of our congregants felt pressured to attend everything that was offered. Jerry Gross, our calendar master, was told that he had to consult with us before adding activities that were not scheduled at our annual calendar meeting that is held in June.

It is now seven months later, and we must make a confession. Many activities were added. There were game nights scheduled in the middle of the week, we gathered to play Bingo, we had guest speakers on Zoom, a theater trip was added, and so were many more events.   What did we learn for adding more offerings to our congregants? Our takeaway is that we have a wide variety of people who belong to our congregation. Some come only for services, but many consider the Temple their family. They look forward to socializing with their friends many days of the week. The Temple is their social and emotional support system. They enjoy a full calendar with a variety of offerings.

What each of you should be aware of is the great amount of time that goes into the preparation of each of these gatherings. A very successful Bingo event, a Chanukah Pajamaka evening and dinner, a single adult education evening on Zoom, a Bring a Dairy Dish to share supper, all require organization and effort to put into place. Huge thanks go Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Fundraising, Ritual, House, Membership, Caring Community, Religious school, ALL of our committees and EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO VOLUNTEERS TO ORGANIZE AND HOST AN EVENT. YOUR EFFORTS ARE APPRECIATED!!!!!

The next time you attend a gathering at Temple Israel take the time to thank the people who have made it possible. Time and effort went into even the simplest one.  Events don’t just happen!

Wishing everyone well and to be safe as the years closes!

Sincerely,

Bryn Biren & Russell Kaminsky

"Thus says the God of Israel, let my people go!" - Exodus 5:1

This year, on Shabbat on the weekend when we remember and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Jewish world begins reading Shemot, the book of Exodus. Moses tells Pharaoh, "Let my people go!" Those words have echoed down the centuries. In his work, the Mishneh Torah, Maimonides writes, "There is no greater mitzvah than the liberation of prisoners."  As I write these words for the bulletin, Syrians jailed by the Assad regime are being freed, and there is even some hopeful news that the surviving hostages taken into captivity in Gaza on October 7, 2023 may finally be released. I hope that when you read these words, they have been restored to their families.

American civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer said, "nobody's free until everybody's free." Dr. King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

May our voices ring out for freedom on the Shabbat when we honor Dr. King, and may we continue to work for justice, freedom and peace for all.

Happy Secular New Year to everyone.

In December we had the joy of celebrating the Baby naming of Lennon Singer. We again thank Sisterhood, Brotherhood and the School Committee for the many ways they help our Temple Family including the Holiday Gift Fair on December 8, the Children’s assembly and Chanukah Party on December 15. Chanukah Pajamakah and the Pre-Chanukah New Member Shabbat dinner on December 20. We note that the first Hanukah candle was lit at sundown on Wednesday December 25. Friday Night Erev Shabbat Services on December 27, we lit the Shabbat and Chanukah candles at services.

We discussed the following at our last meeting: We would like to bring some more Shabbat morning services back in person. A Shabbat Morning Family Service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday April 4. This will enable more opportunities for our children and young families to experience traditional Saturday morning Shabbat Services with a Torah Service. Please save the date.

We discussed the Purim Spiel and are researching a new Megillah to be read on Erev Purim (March 13). The Jennifer Straniere Memorial Passover Seder will be on April 12. We are also starting to plan our Yom Ha Shoah Program which will take place on April 23.

We are continually grateful to Jim Rohan for his musical leadership on those Friday nights when Cantor Bernstein is not here.

On January 3, our Family Shabbat Service will include a the January Birthday/Anniversary celebration. January 17 will include Tot Shabbat at 5:30 and Cantor and the Adult Choir will sing that evening at 7:30 PM to celebrate a special Social Justice Shabbat.

This month we will also be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Charlie Holden Baver on January 25, 2025. We are very happy that the practice of having Bar/Bat Mitzvah Parents usher at these services has been reinstated. Chad and Jenn Rachman will be ushering at the service as we look forward ot to their son, Elliott being called to the Torah next month. (Please supprt Elliott's Mitzvah Project. See flyer below.)

Please look to your e-mails, messages, Temple Israel’s News and Notes, our Facebook Page and this E-Shalom for additional information as it becomes available.

We look forward to seeing you at all our Services and Holiday Celebrations.

YES. WE ARE TIRED!

But, we are thrilled that so many people shared Chanukah Pajamakah, a delicious Pre-Chanukah Shabbat Dinner, wonderful dessert sand suganyot-filled onegs, a Holiday Gift Fare, a Girls’ Day Out Brunch, a Christmas Day meal prep for the hungry and so much more with Sisterhood during the month of December. We love what we do, and we are grateful to be able to work hard for Temple Israel, our congregants and our community.

We know that you will join us as we thank all those Sisterhood members and Friends of Sisterhood who worked so hard to make all the above-mentioned events happen:

·     Blanche Ricci, our Judaica Shop Queen, along with lots of help from Deanna Feder, Linda Brill and so many other Sisterhood members, put together a Holiday Gift Fair filled with all the best gifts and Chanukah supplies we could ever want.

·     Very special thanks to Shariann Ganz for working so hard and cooking so much for the Chanukah dinner, with a little help in the brisket and latke department from Pam Rogozin and Jodi Siegel.

·     We are grateful to Libby Gershansky, Linda Brill, Inez Singer, Blanche Ricci, Shariann Ganz and Jodi Siegel who spent the morning (and much of day) making our social hall look like a Chanukah Wonderland.

·     It’s always fun to see everyone in their Chanukah garb for this special Shabbat, especially those who actually do wear the Chanukah Pajamakahs for this fun evening. Sisterhood especially loves all the Chanukah games and activities we have for children of all ages, and we love to watch Jodi sitting on the floor and playing Chanukah Bingo and Pin the Star on the Menorah with the children. Sisterhood is so happy to provide all the prizes and activities.

·     Thanks to Jodi and Alan Siegel for counting all the 1492 chocolate gelt pieces. For our Guess the Gelt Contest. Congratulations to Michelle Shagenov who had the closest guess and got to take home the entire box!

·     Pamela Rogozin’s amazing organization, dedication and recipes got us through our annual Christmas Day meal preparation and Rev. Terry Troia was on hand to document it and help make sure all those trays of food got to where they were most needed.

·     A few days later, we relaxed a bit with a lovely brunch at Lorenzo’s and got to just spend time with our “sisters” without having to work on any projects.

We look forward to having all congregants join us on Sunday, January 12 for a special presentation from the team from Staten Island University North-Northwell Health. (See the flyer below.) Please join us at 10:00 a.m. for breakfast and a short business meeting before we learn about best practices for maintaining our health from the experts!

It's hard to believe that we will begin planning for the 2025-2026 Sisterhood Year, as we form our Nominating Committee at our January Meeting! We look forward to having you become more involved.

We wish you a happy 2025 with a renewed dedication to Sisterhood of Temple Israel.

Many thanks to this small but mighty group of women (our own Maccabees) who set up for last month's Chanukah Pajamakah New Member Shabbat Dinner.

Brotherhood at Temple Israel continues….Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow

Holiday greetings from Brotherhood have been sent to all Temple Israel congregants by means of our annual Hanukkah greeting card. This year’s card again had beautiful artwork provided by Jules Lee. Our thanks go out to the many participants who joined in sharing the spirit of the Holiday with their fellow Temple members. In addition, Brotherhood co-sponsored this year’s children’s Hanukkah party with the school parents’ committee. We distributed holiday-themed backpacks that included a variety of ‘tchotchkes’ for our children’s enjoyment.

Please be reminded that there is still time to join Brotherhood for the balance of the year. Please send your dues donation to the Temple office (check made out to Brotherhood of Temple Israel )and it will be forwarded to us. As we work our way through the Winter season, we are all looking forward to a Spring

January will be another busy and fun filled month at Religious School!

We want to take a moment to thank Brotherhood and Alan Siegel and Bob Zuckerberg for all of their help and support in co-sponsoring our school Hanukkah Party last month. We had over 30 children in attendance and multiple family members with each child. We’d also like to thank Lissa Winchel and the Fundraising Committee for donating some snacks and drinks. Children enjoyed pizza, snacks, cotton candy, a magic show, face painting, balloon art and games. Most of all, the joy in the room was the greatest gift.

Prior to our party, the students performed some Hanukkah skits in our Hanukkah assembly to get us in the festive mood.

This month kicks off with our Family Shabbat on Friday, January 3rd at 7:00pm. Our students of the month will be honored with certificates. School resumes after winter break on Sunday, January 5th at 9:30am.

On Wednesday, January 15th our annual Dine In at Jimmy Max takes place all day and evening and 50% of your bill will be donated back to our school. We appreciate any and all support from our congregants.

On Sunday, January 26th the school is sponsoring a fun afternoon of BINGO! More information to come and see attached flyer.

Welcome to January

So far, we have scheduled two events for all your children.

On March 9th at 1:30, Our children can cook and create Hamentashen with Chaya Segal who worked with our children making Challah last month.

On April 27th, we have created a wonderful event at The Museum at Eldridge Street, where they will be seeing the beautiful Eldridge Street synagogue.

We continue to hope that you all begin to volunteer at our temple and join committees and begin to think about helping our congregation survive! Please reach out to us if you have an interest in volunteering on a committee or if you have an idea of your own!

And reach out to us if there is a significant place you would love your children to attend.

The story of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel

Dr. Avis originally provided our wonderful Foundation to cover a portion of the membership cost for the first 6 years for young families with young children. Our congregation had been diminishing and he was looking for a way to help us all begin to grow. After meeting with Bryn and Terry a few times, more money was added so the families would also have the opportunities to experience programs for their children. Many wonderful events have been set up for the young families including museum visits, Chanukah cookie designs, a Challah class, a program at the Staten Island Holocaust Center, and many other experiences. The foundation has also helped cover the cost of the religious school teachers.

But then!!!! Covid happened!!!!!!

So the decision was made to use a portion of the foundation money to help all the temple members. The Avis Foundation began to create the zoom classes for the adults in our congregation. These classes are continuing and the foundation covers the costs of them all. The Avis Foundation also covered the cost of the 75th anniversary event. And the foundation is now working with Judy Pessah and the Adult Education Committee to help cover the cost of all the events and classes for the adults in the congregation.

So: Our entire congregation has benefitted from the generosity of the Foundation. Thank you RON!!!!

On Sunday, December 15 we enjoyed a performance of “Gilda and Gene” at the George St. Playhouse inn New Brunswick, N.J.  This is the delightful story of the relationship between performers Gene Wilder and Gilda Ratner.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, January 7, 7:30-– the last presentation by Mark Meyer of his “Anthology of Art”.

We would love to have you help us make arrangements for our programs.  Please tell the “Judys”and Bryn and Terry, if you would ‘love” to join us.

Some of our budding ideas for programs—
