Happy Birthday, Newcastle!

It's your birthday, Newcastle! On September 30, 1994, the City of Newport Hills was formed after the seven-member City Council passed Resolution No. 45 (pictured) on September 22. This document, which now hangs in Council Chambers, declared the official incorporation of our city.

Yes, that's right, we were originally known as the City of Newport Hills. Because there was a similarly named area annexed by Bellevue, a name change proposal was placed on the next general election ballot. On November 8, 1994, voters approved the name Newcastle for the new city.

Thank You Volunteers!

Earlier this week, City of Newcastle hosted a volunteer event in partnership with Expedia and Newcastle Trails. City staff and more than a dozen volunteers joined forces as part of Expedia's Month of Caring program. Volunteers added a new switchback to the East CrossTown Trail, improving the trail grade and accessibility for trail users.

The day-long project not only made a visible difference to the trail, but also strengthened community partnerships. Thank you to Expedia and Newcastle Trails volunteers for their time and energy in improving our trails!

30th Anniversary:

Honoring Community Contributors

As part of our 30th Anniversary, the City of Newcastle Community Activities Commission is honoring some of the remarkable individuals whose contributions have been instrumental in Newcastle's evolution since 1994. They've made an enduring impact, helping our city flourish into the vibrant community it is today.

This week, the Commission highlights Alan and Gigi White, longtime residents dedicated to music education. September 12 was declared Alan White Day in Newcastle (pictured) after he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. A fixture of Newcastle Days, Alan was honored with a special concert after his passing in 2022.
