Last month, I was proud to announce that over a dozen jurisdictions from across the area signed off on a strong letter to our Congressional leadership in Washington, DC. It was in support of Little River Canyon National Preserve and our unique partnership with the National Park Service.
Today, I’m also proud to report that it has been received and our voices have been heard.
Special thanks to all of those who authorized support for the letter and especially our friend and Fort Payne City Council member, Lynn Brewer. She was the first to sign off and then take the lead, soliciting additional support.
So, now, during this Fourth of July weekend in celebration of our country, it’s important that our voices to be heard to protect “America’s best idea!”
In case you didn’t know, that phrase is associated with Mr. Wallace Stegner, an American historian, novelist, and environmentalist. In a 1983 letter to the Director of the National Park Service, he wrote: “National Parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.”
This quote has since become widely used to describe the significance of the US national park system, and it’s often attributed to Stegner in documentaries and park literature, including Ken Burns, 2009 documentary on PBS entitled “Parks: America’s best idea.”
All of us at the Little River Canyon Center thanks everyone who supports our parks because we think that our National Preserve and Canyon Center are pretty good ideas too!
