A Word from the Pastor

July 3, 2025

On this weekend on which we celebrate the great freedom we enjoy as a nation, it is a good time to reflect on the Catholic teaching on the real meaning of freedom.

Freedom, in Catholic teaching, is not simply the ability to do whatever one wants, but a power rooted in reason and will to act or not to act, to do this or that, and to perform deliberate actions on one's own responsibility (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1731). It is a gift from God that allows individuals to shape their own lives and direct themselves toward goodness.

According to Catholic teaching, freedom makes individuals responsible for their actions, especially when those actions are voluntary. True freedom is oriented towards what is truly good and ultimately towards God. It grows and matures when directed toward truth and goodness, reaching perfection when directed toward God, our beatitude (CCC).

Authentic freedom is not a license to do whatever one pleases, especially if it is evil. Freedom is linked with the knowledge of truth. As Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free".

Freedom should not be construed as a pretext for moral anarchy but must remain linked to truth and the moral order. As Pope St. John Paul II said so well, authentic freedom is at the "service of justice," while choosing disobedience and evil leads to the "slavery of sin". He also told us that human freedom has been damaged by sin, and it is only by the aid of God's grace that one can bring their relationship with God into full flower.

On another occasion, Pope John Paul II said that true freedom implies the capability of choosing good without constraint, which is essential for making moral choices. He said that individuals should not be misled by false values and deceptive slogans about freedom, recognizing that true love respects God's plan.

In summary, freedom in the Catholic context is not the choice to do whatever one wants. It is a gift that entails responsibility and is perfected when aligned with truth, goodness, and ultimately, God. It is not an end but a means to pursue what is truly good, and it should not be used as a justification for actions that contradict moral order or harm oneself or others.

For us as Catholics, this what it means “to let freedom ring!”

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

All Are Welcome Mass

Everyone in our community is invited to the Second Annual Diocesan “All Are Welcome” Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, 1638 Polk Ave. San Diego on Sunday, July 13 at 5 PM. The Mass celebrates the gift of the Church as a Mother who loves, embraces and journeys with everyone who want to be closer to Christ. As our late Pope Francis proclaimed, “Todos, Todos, Todos.” Bishop Ramon Bejarano will preside, joined by the priests of several San Diego parishes ministering to the LGBTQ community.

Annual Peter’s Pence Collection

The Peter’s Pence collection is a gesture of solidarity through which every member of the faithful can participate in the activity of the Pope as Pastor of the universal Church. Our donations to the Holy Father through the Peter’s Pence Collection are destined to Church needs, to humanitarian initiatives and social promotion projects, as well as to the support of the Holy See.

Our collection will be July 12-13. Envelopes for this purpose were included in your packet of envelopes. Additional envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Put your envelope in our one collection on that weekend or the following weekend.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process through which people become fully initiated into the Catholic community. This includes:

  • Adults who have never been baptized
  • Adults who were baptized in another Christian religion but now want to join the Catholic Church
  • Adults who were baptized as Catholics but never received the Sacrament of Confirmation (OCIA is not for adolescents; adults only)

Our program meets on Sunday mornings after the 9:00 am Mass. It is held in the parish center from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Except for a few holiday weekends, it meets every Sunday. The first session will be Sunday, September 14, 2025. Regular attendance is important. Those who complete the process will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil (April 4, 2026).

To get enrolled, you need to make an appointment with Fr. Ron. Email him at rmbagley@yahoo.com

Gospel Reading

Luke 10:1-12,17-20

Jesus sends out 72 people to announce the coming kingdom.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today's Gospel begins immediately after the final verse in last Sunday's Gospel. After strong language about the difficulties of discipleship, Jesus immediately appoints 72 people to go ahead of him to every town and place he plans to visit, proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at hand. He sends them in pairs. In the Law of Moses two witnesses were needed for a testimony to be credible. It was probably also a safer way to travel.

Jesus admits it will be difficult, that he is sending them out like lambs among wolves. Yet they are to bring nothing with them, not even a money bag or sandals. They are to greet no one on the way so as not to be distracted from their mission. When they enter a house, their message is simply “peace.” The response they will receive may be positive or negative. Either way, they are to know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. They are not to demand special treatment but eat and drink whatever is given to them. They are to stay in one house and are not to look around for one that provides better accommodation. They are to heal the sick as a sign that the Kingdom of God is at hand for them. Like Jesus' miracles, healing is a sign of the coming of the kingdom. If the town will not receive them, they are to shake the dust from their feet and move on. Even in the case of such rejection they should know that the Kingdom of God is at hand.

When they return from their journeys, they are rejoicing because their mission has been successful. Demons were under their power because of Jesus' name. Jesus may have sent them out as lambs among wolves, but at the conclusion of this passage he assures them that they have been given power over the enemy and nothing will harm them, not even serpents and scorpions.

A key theme of today's Gospel and last Sunday's Gospel is discipleship—its challenges, its difficulties, and its rewards. Sharing in the mission of Jesus is difficult, but everyone is called to do it, not just some professionals trained for ministry. Even for us today, the harvest is plentiful. We should pray to the master of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.

6-week Summer Bible Study

with the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Paul carefully composed his letter to the Christians in Rome. He poured into it his deepest reflection on who Jesus Christ is and what he means for humankind.

Paul has spent many years pondering the gospel, sharing it with other people and observing its effects in their lives. As we listen to him, we will encounter much enthusiasm and hope.

In small sharing groups we will discuss Paul’s good news about Jesus and the impact of the gospel on our lives.
