A Word from the Pastor
June 30, 2023
I always enjoy the excitement and joy of children receiving Holy Communion for the first time. Typically, that happens during the month of May and we have several First Communion Masses. I always take the opportunity to invite the rest of the congregation to consider if they have the same excitement and joy in receiving Communion. It is such a privilege for us to be able to receive the Body of Christ.
During this year of Eucharistic Revival, I think that each one of us (including we priests) has the opportunity to renew our sense of wonder and joy at receiving Holy Communion each week (or even daily). At every celebration of the Eucharist, Jesus extends an invitation to us: “Take and eat. This is my Body.” Just before we receive Communion, the priest boldly proclaims: “Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” Does that invitation stir up anything inside of you?
Even though we pray: “Lord, I am not worthy…,” God makes us worthy. Jesus says: come to me with your sins and your hesitation. I will feed you, heal you, make you strong. If we wait until we feel worthy, we will miss the opportunity to welcome the Lord into our hearts.
I also want to say a word about those of us who distribute the Eucharist as Holy Communion: the priests, deacons and special ministers of the Eucharist. We also feel the great privilege of sharing the Body of Christ with our brothers and sisters. It fills us with joy as we distribute the Body of Christ at Mass or bring Communion to people in their homes. But we also feel unworthy.
We are called to this ministry not because we are worthy or are holier than anyone else. As St. Paul says: we are earthen vessels, fragile and even broken. We are very aware of our sinfulness. Despite our faults, God uses us as instruments of his grace. We humbly accept the invitation of the Lord to feed His Body (the Church) with the Body of Christ (the Eucharist).
We are blessed to have a good number of Special Ministers of Holy Communion in our parish who minister on a regular basis. They are generous with their time and feel privileged to share in this ministry. In all humility, they minister at the altar despite their unworthiness. I am very grateful for their service.
At the same time, I have to say that we need more Eucharistic Ministers. Some did not return after the pandemic. Some have moved away. Some just felt a need to "retire.” I am asking each of our parishioners to prayerfully consider an invitation from the Lord to share in this ministry. Please consider serving as a Special Minister of Holy Communion in our parish. During this year of Eucharistic Revival, I would like to see us double the number of lay people who distribute the Eucharist.
Next weekend, there will be a table on the patio at which some Eucharistic ministers will be available to answer your questions about this ministry. You will even be able to sign up if you feel called. But don’t wait until you feel worthy.
In one Heart,
Fr. Ron
