Privy Dig ...
The Rockford Area Historical Society is sponsoring a Privy Dig on Saturday, July 14 th at the Stork House. Prior to the dig we will have a program at 9 am (tentatively at the Community Building at the high school) where Mark and his partner will discuss what they do during a dig. They will also have some examples of what they have found at other digs. After the presentation we will move to the Stork House for the actual dig.

And yes, what they do is dig out where the outhouse(s) used to be! In the “olden days”, outhouses were sometimes used to dispose of non-composting items, most often glass bottles. Liquor bottles are common: think of it this way, in an era and community that frowned on liquor, what better place to get rid of the evidence?

Though the dig itself will probably be a bit tedious, the Stork House will be open for tours from 9-1. So come and visit the house and check out the progress on the dig!

It is our plan to display the items found during the Privy Dig at a later time.

Plan for delays, detour ...
July 9 to mid/late-August - detour
Hwy 55 from Division St in Buffalo to Autumn Oaks/Electric Dr in Rockford closed, detour for up to seven weeks.
Hwy 55 Autumn Oaks/Electric Dr in Rockford to Crow River Bridge – lanes close occasionally.
