Hafa Adai Catherine,
At a July general membership meeting several years ago, our guest speaker was former Congressman, General Vicente "Ben" Blaz. He spoke of the struggles as a boy at the time of the Japanese occupation of Guam. In his recounting of experiences, I was immediately drawn into the difficulty and extreme hardship he and the Chamorro people endured through the subjugation of imperial Japanese forces. Although we did not have the technology at the time of General Blaz's presentation to record his talk, we were able to capture Mrs. Maria Cruz Quitugua's story in 2019 on video of her recounting of the invasion of Guam and the day U.S. armed forces came to liberate our island. I hope that you have a few minutes this weekend to listen as she shares her vivid memories and experiences of the war.
As we commemorate the 79th liberation of our island we remember our forefathers and liberators who fought bravely through this tragic period, with thousands giving their lives for the freedom of Guam and her people. We also look ahead with hope as our parents and grandparents did. Their sacrifices, grit, and resiliency paved the way to peace and prosperity. Today we celebrate the strength and love of our people for our Island and our Nation.
Nihi ta hasso...God Bless Guam and God Bless America! Biba Liberacion! Have a wonderful Liberation Day holiday.
Onward together,
Catherine Castro
President
