Happy Anniversary: Nine Years Ago

Happy Anniversary to the “new DBT”! Nine years ago today, we opened the doors of the Dharma Bum Temple in its current home after a decade downtown. That first day was unforgettable with over 200 people gathered for a beautiful meditation, marking the beginning of a new chapter and welcoming the community into a space we could finally grow into.

For those who may not know, the Dharma Bums spent ten years in a small downtown space we had long outgrown. At the same time, Buddha for You was thriving for eight years in a strip mall near SDSU, building a strong and vibrant community of its own.

At the end of 2016, with just $7,000 and a lot of faith, we launched a fundraising campaign to bring these two communities together under one roof. In just 108 days, 1,123 people stepped forward to make donations and make it possible. Because of that collective effort, we were able to secure the down payment and purchase what is now the Dharma Bum Temple.

The 99-year-old building itself would have been torn down if not for this community. What came together during that time was something truly rare. A shared vision, a deep generosity, and a kind of unity that still resonates today. It was, in every sense, a miracle.

To everyone who has been part of this journey we thank you. The Dharma Bum Temple exists because of you, and it continues to be here for you.

Dharma Bum Garden Club: Starts April 25th

There is something deeply grounding about working with the earth with hands in the soil, breath in rhythm with the body, fully present in the moment. The Dharma Bum Temple is excited to introduce a new way to practice mindfulness in community: the Dharma Bum Garden Club.

Beginning Saturday, April 25th, we will gather every Saturday from 10:00am -11:00am to care for the temple grounds together. This is a relaxed, welcoming space where we will engage in light gardening activities such as weeding, watering, raking, sweeping, and tending to the beauty of our shared environment.

No experience is necessary, just a willingness to show up. Come as you are. Bring your presence. Let us cultivate the garden and the mind together. Thanks to Erika, Keith and Danny for leading this new garden club!

Birthday Fundraiser: Support is Needed

DONORS: 88

RAISED: $19,458

NEEDED: $30,542

The Dharma Bum Temple welcomes 500+ people a week and everything we do is free. I cannot stress enough how difficult it is to sustain this organization and make sure everyone and everything is taken care of. Each year since 2016, I lead a Spring fundraiser for my birthday and without raising these funds we simply can not operate, it’s that simple. Thus I beg everyday for donations.

Please help me with my birthday wish so we can sustain the Dharma Bum Temple. Please take two minutes right now and consider making a tax-deductible donation of any amount today to support the Dharma Bum Temple.

Weekend Retreats Available

Enjoy a Weekend Retreat at the DBT

Imagine arriving on a quiet Thursday or Friday afternoon, settling in for a two or three night personal retreat. After checking in, you might take a short walk just three blocks to Sprouts Farmers Market, either on your own or with a couple of fellow retreatants, to gather simple vegetarian foods for the weekend (unless you prefer to bring your own).

Each day begins with an 8:00am meditation, followed by the Temple’s regular schedule of classes, all of which you’re invited to join. In between, there’s plenty of time to rest and reconnect whether that means reading, studying, meditating, gardening, napping, or simply wandering the peaceful grounds and enjoying the outdoor Japanese Zen Garden.
