Tarra and ERNA: A Perfect Match!

Tarra has been at Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA) for three incredible years. From the very first day, she immersed herself in the landscape, grazing the lush pastures and exploring the dense woods. Within weeks, her large footprints revealed she had spent countless hours traversing every inch of her new 850-acre home.

Exploration immediately became Tarra’s favorite pastime, second only to eating. But soon, she developed a new interest—and his name was Bo. While continuing to explore her habitat, Tarra began spending more and more time with Bo. Initially timid, she quickly grew comfortable in his presence, marking the start of a profoundly caring relationship.

Bo and Tarra Bosom Buddies

Before coming to ERNA, Tarra was known for her independent spirit, rarely spending extended time with other elephants. True to form, upon her arrival, she continued walking miles each day in search of undiscovered food and adventure. However, her behavior shifted dramatically. Rather than seeking solitude, she spent long periods with Bo. When Mundi arrived 18 months later, Tarra’s newfound love for socializing extended to include her.

Tarra and Mundi Soul Sisters

Now, Tarra comfortably spends hours interacting with both Bo and Mundi, whether grazing, napping, or engaging in playful trunk tug-of-war with Bo—who, ever the gentleman, always lets her win. It’s clear that her growing social interactions have brought an enriching new dimension to her life.

Tarra and Her Loyal Canines

Tarra is the poster child for sanctuary living. At just 21 years old, she became the first elephant in the U.S. to be retired to a natural habitat setting, free from human dominance and exhibition. Her retirement was a groundbreaking experiment in improved captive elephant care, and she continues to exemplify the importance of autonomy and freedom in helping elephants thrive. Today, Tarra radiates health and happiness, both in body and spirit, and is a joy to behold.

Tarra’s love for dogs remains as strong as ever. Mala intuitively understands Tarra’s desire to touch and share her presence, often resting in the shade of Tarra’s gentle bulk. Samie darts in for quick trunk licks before racing off on new adventures, leaving Mala as Tarra’s loyal companion for a while longer. Hearing Tarra chirp with delight at her canine friends’ arrival is a heartwarming reminder that elephants form bonds with many individuals, not just other elephants.

Mundi, Bo, and Tarra Caring Companions

Tarra continues to be a teacher, mentor, and shining example of what humane care for captive-held elephants looks like. Provide autonomy, spacious natural surroundings, and compatible companionship, and watch them flourish.

Happy Third Anniversary, Tarra!

Ramp Up for Bo, Tarra, and Mundi

In honor of Tarra's third anniversary at the Refuge, we're pushing to reach our goal of $28,500 to fund a new concrete ramp for Elephant Lake. So far, we've raised $21,433!

Currently, the lake's soft mud entrance makes it difficult for the elephants to exit after a swim, leading Mundi and Tarra to avoid the water and causing Bo some discomfort in his hind legs afterward. A solid concrete ramp, similar to a boat ramp, will create a safe and easy pathway for all three elephants to enjoy the lake whenever they choose.

Elephants love bathing to cool off and for the sheer joy of being in the water. Watching them glide, splash, and vocalize shows just how much they delight in these moments. With a secure ramp, Bo, Mundi, and Tarra will have the freedom to enjoy this natural enrichment fully.

The project will take several days and require heavy equipment, including bulldozers, dump trucks, and concrete mixers. We're thrilled to share that a generous donor who prefers to remain anonymous has generously pledged to match every donation dollar for dollar until we reach our goal of doubling your impact.

By contributing to this project, you'll be helping give Bo, Tarra, and Mundi a gift of health and happiness in honor of Tarra's special milestone. Every dollar you donate brings us closer to completing the much-needed ramp for Elephant Lake.
