Jovita Carranza Pledges to Create More Opportunities for Women, Underserved, and Veteran Entrepreneurs
Received Broad Bipartisan Support During U.S. Senate Confirmation as New SBA Administrator
Jovita Carranza now serves as the 26
th
Administrator of the
U.S. Small Business Administration.
Administrator Carranza will lead the only federal agency exclusively dedicated to assisting small business owners and entrepreneurs in starting, growing, and expanding their businesses. Additionally, the SBA provides targeted recovery support in the event of a declared disaster. This is Administrator Carranza’s second tenure at the SBA. She served in the George W. Bush Administration as Deputy Administrator, from 2006-2009. The President nominated Administrator Carranza to lead the SBA while she was serving as the 44
th
Treasurer of the United States. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a strong bipartisan vote of 88-5.
“I want to thank the President for his confidence in me to be an advocate in the Cabinet for our country’s 30 million small businesses, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the U.S. Senate for confirming me in a bipartisan fashion,” Administrator
Carranza said. “I look forward to helping elevate female entrepreneurs and our military veterans, expanding access to SBA resources among entrepreneurs in disadvantaged communities, and continuing to prioritize disaster relief.”
“I would like to thank former Administrator Linda McMahon for her leadership at the SBA, and the dedicated professionals at the Agency during this transition,” said Administrator Carranza.
Administrator Carranza’s experience includes a remarkable 30-year career with United Parcel Service, where she began as an hourly dock worker, rose to oversee operations in Latin America and the Caribbean, and ultimately retired as the highest-ranking Latina in the company’s history.
In testimony on December 11, 2019, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Administrator Carranza discussed her hands-on experience in the private sector, public service and the life-changing potential of entrepreneurship:
“Throughout my life – as a young girl in a working-class community, as an executive leader at a global company, and as a government official – I’ve seen the transformative power entrepreneurship can have on individuals, communities, and the global economy.”
Administrator Carranza pledged to preside over an Agency focused on creating more opportunities for women and historically underrepresented entrepreneurs while ensuring the SBA remains prepared to assist displaced homeowners and small businesses impacted by disaster:
“Members of this Committee, whatever success I achieved in life has been a function of not only hard work, but also opportunity, guidance and advocacy I received from others.
… I will leverage the power of this agency to continue to provide the same kind of support that I received, to entrepreneurs who need it most. I intend to put particular emphasis on opening more doors for women and for entrepreneurs in underserved communities, including military families and veterans. And I intend to prioritize disaster preparedness.”
Administrator Carranza earned her MBA from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and received executive, governance, management and financial training at the INSEAD Business School in Paris, France; Michigan State University; and the University of Chicago.

Bristol Community College Names New Dean of Bristol Attleboro Campus
Kate O’Hara has been named Dean of the
Bristol Community College Attleboro Campus
. Kate comes to Bristol after working as Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Bay State College in Boston, Mass.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in management at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.; her Master of Education
in administration of higher education from Suffolk University, in Boston, Mass. and her Master of Business Administration from Boston University in Boston, Mass.
She will utilize her experience to direct the advancement of the Attleboro Campus, including fostering a student-centered educational environment responsive to the needs of students, as well as the recruitment and retention of Attleboro students. Kate will also advance relationships with community organizations and leaders to develop new collaborations to further foster a college-going culture in the Attleboro region. She will also lead strategic planning efforts for the Attleboro Campus, while developing innovations consistent with the college’s strategic goals. She began her new role at Bristol Community College on Monday, January 13, 2020.
Following a position at Bay State College as Director of Residence Life and Dean of Students, O’Hara became the institution’s Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students in October 2014. During this time, she led the Department of Student Affairs, including the areas of Residence Life, Student Involvement, Counseling and Disability Support Services, Student Success & Wellness, Student Financial Services and more. In this role, she developed and implemented a student support services model and directed all efforts related to student satisfaction and retention. She was also responsible for managing division budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility and maintaining institutional compliance.
In addition to her role as Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Kate has also previously served as Interim Vice President of Admissions at Bay State College in Boston, Mass. During this time, she oversaw recruitment for all programs and locations and developed a seamless experience for students in the enrollment process by integrating services in admissions, financial aid and student life.
Kate has also participated in several professional organizations within higher education including
Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education
(NASPA) and the
Association for Student Conduct Administration
(ASCA).

Bristol County Savings Bank to Acquire Freedom National Bank
Bristol County Savings Bank
, a Massachusetts chartered savings bank and Freedom National Bank, a national bank, have jointly announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement, pursuant to which Bristol County Savings Bank will acquire Freedom National Bank.
Under the terms of the agreement, Freedom National Bank will be merged into Bristol County Savings Bank. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2020. Following the acquisition, Bristol County Savings Bank expects to continue to operate Freedom National Bank’s offices, located in Greenville and Cumberland, Rhode Island, as branches of Bristol County Savings Bank.
Following the completion of the transaction, Bristol County Savings Bank will have consolidated assets of approximately $2.4 billion and a branch network of 18 full-service offices.
Patrick J. Murray, Jr., Chief Executive Officer and President of Bristol County Savings Bank, stated “We are pleased and excited that the Freedom National team will join our family at Bristol County Savings, and that Anthony A. Botelho, President of Freedom National Bank, will join our bank with leadership responsibility in our markets. This acquisition will deepen our already strong ties to the Rhode Island market and is a perfect fit for the Bank strategically, as well as, geographically. We look forward to serving the customers of Freedom National Bank and providing them an even broader array of banking solutions to meet their financial needs.”
Anthony A. Botelho, President of Freedom National Bank, added, “Bristol County Savings Bank is the ideal partner for Freedom National. Their local geography, stellar reputation and commitment to customer service will benefit both the customers and employees of Freedom National Bank and their northern Rhode Island communities as well.”
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and terms and conditions of the definitive agreement between the parties.
Griffin Financial Group LLC acted as financial advisor to Bristol County Savings Bank and Janney Montgomery Scott LLC acted as financial advisor to Freedom National Bank. Luse Gorman, PC served as legal counsel to Bristol County Savings Bank and Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP served as legal counsel to Freedom National Bank.
