BATON ROUGE, La. -- Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser is inviting the public to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area--- a program of the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in the Office of the Lt. Governor---- during Atchafalaya Month this October.
The ANHA is one of 49 national heritage areas in the U.S. and one of only two in Louisiana. It received federal designation in October 2006 and has since partnered with numerous nonprofits, community organizations and governmental agencies to preserve and promote the unique stories, cultural and natural resources of its 14 parishes. Current programs include the Educational Speaker Series, French Immersion Excursions and development of the Atchafalaya Water Heritage Trail.
"The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is a vital asset for tourism in the heart of Louisiana," Lt. Gov. Nungesser said. "Atchafalaya Month raises awareness for ANHA programs and promotes fun, educational opportunities to enjoy this unique region-from paddling and biking to speaking French and learning how to dance zydeco. We look forward to continuing to educate locals and visitors about America's Foreign Country for many years to come."
To commemorate its 10th anniversary this October, the ANHA will:
- Highlight local cultural economic development each Monday of the month by unveiling five short videos showcasing artisans who live and work in the heritage area. Each artisan's work is inspired by the natural and cultural resources of his or her surroundings. Visit Atchafalaya.org or the ANHA Facebook page to view the videos as they are released.
- Offer a fun, low-stakes photo game on social media called "Where Are We Now?" Every weekday of the month the ANHA will post a new photo on its Facebook and Instagram pages and ask fans to guess where in the heritage area the photo was taken. The first participant on each social platform to answer correctly will be eligible to receive an ANHA water bottle.
- Serve as a public resource for numerous outdoor recreation events, festivals and educational programs taking place throughout the heritage area this month via its website calendar.

Established in 2006, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is among the most culturally rich and ecologically varied regions in the U.S. It is made up of the following parishes: Ascension, Assumption, Avoyelles, Concordia, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Lafayette, Iberia, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, Terrebonne and West Baton Rouge.
