Happy Birthday Quick Vic!

Today we salute our 2012 Amelia Concours Honoree and sports car ace Vic Elford on his birthday.

“Quick Vic” quickly became one of those rare racers who shines in any kind of race car. With World Sports Car Championship victories at Daytona, Sebring, the Targa Florio plus a trio of wins on the Nordschleife, Vic’s most impressive wins came within a week of each other scoring back-to-back victories in the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally (with a borrowed Porsche 911) and notching Porsche’s first overall victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona in a works 907.

He admits his favorite race car is the mighty Porsche 917. And when you ask him which 917 he says, with lust and without hesitation, “All of them!” as he is the only racer who has raced every one of Stuttgart’s 12-cylinder monsters from the 917LH to the 917/30 Interseries/Can-Am champ.

Perhaps his greatest and yet unheralded drive came the same year he won the Monte Carlo Rally and the 24 Hours of Daytona. Driving an obsolete Cooper/BRM in the soaking French Grand Prix at Rouen Vic somehow managed fourth place (yes, it was raining) behind Jacky Ickx, 1964 World Champion John Surtees and Jackie Stewart on his first drive in the stodgy Cooper. Bravo, Quick.

We salute you. Again. Happy Birthday!
