May 1 Roundabout Construction
The construction for a new roundabout at the intersection of State Road 572 (Drane Field Road) and Don Emerson Drive is slated to start May 1, 2022. The single lane roundabout is being constructed to accommodate the traffic demand at this intersection which serves as the primary access to the Lakeland Regional Airport and the Publix Super Markets corporate offices. The completed project will also include drainage, lighting, and landscape improvements.

Intersection Avoidance
Safety Program
The City of Lakeland was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to expand the Intersection Avoidance Safety Program (ICASP) to include 25 additional high-impact intersections. The system has sensors that measure the speed of a vehicle and its distance from the intersection. It then predicts whether the driver is going to run the red light or be clear of the intersection in time.
