Spring NOW was a big success!
Thank you to our many Spring NOW volunteers, to our donors, and especially to our pollinator planting project leader, Kathy Sykes! Over the last six weeks, we've cleaned up trash, we've given the streatery a makeover, placed potted plants in front of our small businesses, and planted hundreds (and hundreds!) of flowers along Connecticut Ave. Special thanks go to Muchas Gracias who graciously provided our volunteers with a delicious lunch this weekend - it was fantastic!
We have three more events this weekend - just in time for Earth Week.
-
This Saturday, join VNMS, Kathy Sykes and local volunteers for a special Earth Week pollinator planting in front of Italian Pizza Kitchen in Van Ness. April 24th from 1-4 p.m., 4483 Connecticut Ave. Sign up here.
-
This Sunday, join Kathy Sykes on a 75-minute Walking Master Gardener Tour for Kids to explore the street gardens along Connecticut Ave. Learn the names and unique features of some of our native and perennial plants. Farmers Markets Return to UDC and Sheridan School on Saturday, May 1st -- via Forest Hills Connection.
New Morning Farm market and the UDC Van Ness farmers market are both opening for the 2021 season on Saturday, May 1st. Also back for the season: the markets’ social distancing rules and mandatory mask-wearing. The New Morning Farm market at Sheridan School (36th Street and Alton Place) will be taking online preorders again as well.
“The veggies are growing fast!” wrote New Morning head farmer Jenni Glenister in an email newsletter. “I think the lettuce doubled in size this last week. We’re starting to hear encouraging updates from our neighbor growers. Spring plantings are doing well, and everyone is optimistic!”
The UDC market will return to the plaza outside the student center (4200 Connecticut Ave.), along with at least eleven of the 2020 vendors, some newcomers, and the 2020 market’s student manager, Meagan Miller. This will be her last season running the market, as she is graduating this year. Though Miller faced many challenges in getting the market up and running in the pandemic last year, she told Forest Hills Connection that she enjoyed the work and is happy to come back. “I missed the people. I like working with the community and community organizing,” Miller said.
These are the eleven returning UDC market vendors that had applied as of last week.
Kings Produce
Hours: The New Morning Farm Market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting in December. The Tuesday summer market will return to Sheridan School on June 1st, and operates from 3 to 7 p.m.
The UDC Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and generally closes for the season on the last Saturday before Thanksgiving.
