FEATURED WINES
STAFF PICKS FOR EASTER:
Darrin's Pick:
2015 Mayacamas Chardonnay, Mt Veeder, Napa Valley
I thought I should go out with a bang (see the Blog for more), and this is certainly in the conversation for Big Bang Chardonnay of California. Sleek is the first word that came to mind as I swished this around my mouth. It is all about the dry-farmed, old-vine fruit that comes from this historic property as most of the blend is raised in larger neutral barrels. Apple, pear, lemon and lime notes can all be detected with subsequent sips. Acidity is central to the winemaking philosophy here, so early picking is the norm; it shows through in the liveliness of the wine and their nearly legendary age-ability. Many changes have happened over the winery's 129 year history, but tasting this vintage gives this fan reason to believe the new winemaking team (since 2013) is back on the right track. -$67.99
Patti's Pick:
2015 François Chidaine, Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos Habert
François Chidaine is a biodynamic producer in the Loire Valley specializing in Chenin Blanc. For me, this was the stand out at a recent comparative tasting comprised of 10 other Chenin Blancs from the Loire Valley. The prestigious site Clos Habert, has soils comprised of Silex (flint), clay, and chalk. Low yields, hand harvesting, and the fact that the vines are 60-90 years old with roots deeply embedded in the limestone bedrock, all indicate a special tasting experience is to be had. Although this wine is always vinified in a demi-sec style, it is focused with a bracing freshness. The palate is complex, presenting notes of exotic fruits, delicate honeysuckle, and lemongrass. It's a wine for sharing with friends and family and it would be delightful paired with your Easter meal. -$35.99
Katrina's Pick:
2013 Albert Boxler, Edelzwicker Reserve
Albert Boxler, the Alsatian Domaine founded in 1673, produces some of the worlds finest white wines with organic farming and a traditional approach to wine-making. Boxler's 2013 Edelzwicker is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. While traditionally thought of as an Alsatian table wine, Edelzwicker is far from a simple white blend. Layers of aromatics and flavors will infinitely entertain your senses and offer a versatile array of food pairings. You couldn't go wrong with this wine if you tried. -$29.99
Dave's Pick:
2016 Birichino Saint Georges Pinot Noir Central Coast
Here in the waning days of the 2010 decade, California's reputation as a world class wine region seems firmly established. Crafty winemakers are using this credibility to explore marginal, idiosyncratic sites and wine styles more closely aligned with thier European inspirations. As Bonny Doon veterans, the team at Birichino have more experience with this sort of mindset than most. With the Saint George bottling they've combined some cool rocky sites on the Eastern side of the Santa Cruz mountains to create a light bodied Pinot with bright pops of earthy spiciness and savory fruit notes like pomegranate and cranberry. This is of that special style where big flavor defies apparent weight. This will be a great choice if you happen to be eating ham this weekend and want something a bit out of the ordinary. -$28.99
Madison's Pick:
2015 Heinrich Red, Burgenland Austria
RED is the intro wine of Gernot and Heike Heinrich's selection, a leading producer in Austria's Burgenland region. It is a biodynamic blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, and St. Laurent - Austria's three signature red grapes. Don't let the screwcap and unassuming label fool you into discounting this wine's greatness. Its a little floral, a little spice, earthy red berries, refreshing acidity, and totally delicious. -$18.99
