A Note from Scott and Marsha
April 12, 2022
I love North Carolina. I love our extreme weather changes. I love that it is 34 degrees in the morning and 83 degrees by the afternoon. I love wearing three layers of clothes and removing them as the day goes on. I love doing extra laundry because all three layers are dirty. It's truly my favorite. (Said no one ever.)  It took almost all weekend to finish the laundry for Scott and me both. I would have rather been planting but it was too cold to risk it. But now?! Literally sweating behind my knees.

This week has been crazy moving plants inside and out by carts, rolling carts, and trailers. Shout out to the Garden Center staff because it takes a village to make it happen around here. We know we are turning the corner for spring and all blooms are about to break loose.

One afternoon, the Garden Center team was filling the Robin's Nest with plants and tucking them in for safe keeping. Normally I am not around for this but that afternoon I thought I would jump in and help out for a hot minute.

I moved a couple trays and was reflecting on moving plants inside the garden center and how they were in our offices and covering the entire house. That was also when we had zero shopping space and all our offices were up there instead of in the house across the pond.

Ann was directing us and I wanted to be super helpful. Right up until something bit me. The worst part was I didn't know what it was. So I kept looking at my finger waiting for it to double in size. Was it a spider? A bug of some sort that would melt my finger off? I'm not dramatic. Ok, maybe a little.

After a few minutes of whining, it subsided and there wasn't a need to rush to the ER. But these are the "dangers" we face every day. You never know what will happen at FGS. Ok, I kid. It's somewhat harmless, comparatively speaking. The most dangerous thing that could possibly happen is you shop for one plant and leave with ten. It really is like that, I swear.

Enjoy a beautiful holiday weekend. We will be closed on Sunday and Monday so don't miss a chance to gather all your plants early this week!!! Hop to it ^-^

BLOOMING TROPICALS
These tropicals are bringin' in the heat! Hibiscus, Mandevilla, and Dipladenia are brightening up our garden center with a range of colors! These babies bloom all summer long and are excellent long-term floral friends (or you can swap them out each spring, like annuals).
PLANT STANDS
Are you out of shelf space for your houseplant collection?
Give your plants some height! Our Pottery Lead, Mariah, has searched far and wide to bring you a variety of plant stand options that will fit your curent decor or look oh-so-adorable on a covered porch! We have several sizes and shapes throughout the Garden Center so make sure to take a peek while you shop!
BUTTERFLY BUSHES
BUDDLEIA DAVIDII
There's something magical about the way butterflies perch on flowers. What better way to capture that magic than to plant butterfly bushes in your own backyard? We have a wide variety right now! They bloom in the spring and summer and attract butterflies and beneficial insects. They can grow quite large -up to 12 feet tall -so make sure you know your space before choosing and plant them with plenty of room to stretch!

Plant Tip of the Week: BUTTERFLY IN THE SKY
Last week we talked about pests but this week we want to talk about bugs we LOVE to have around our plants. Pollinators are so important to help new growth in spring time, and perhaps the most magestic of them all is the butterfly. If you would like to learn more about planting a pollinator-friendly garden, check out our blog post about Butterfly Gardens!
