2023 Notable Woman in STEM by Crain’s Business

Maya Huggins-Garcia

Congratulations, Maya Huggins-Garcia, Exelon's community engagement manager, for being recognized as one of the 2023 Notable Women in STEM by Crain's Chicago Business! This award honors Maya’s work expanding opportunities for young leaders in our communities, including launching two scholarships, the HBCU Corporate scholarship and Exelon Foundation STEM Academy scholarship, and managing the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the quartet of hard sciences that has historically employed a dearth of women — at last count, 28%, according to data from the American Association of University Women.

The 100 STEM professionals profiled are most assuredly changing that. They mentor at their companies and volunteer at Chicago-area nonprofits dedicated to introducing girls — particularly girls of color — to STEM careers. Even more critically, their careers as physicians, biologists, neuroscientists, physicists, architects, engineers, computer scientists, technologists, STEM educators and leaders of STEM nonprofits prove to young women that there is plenty of room for them in the wide-ranging, creative and lucrative world that is STEM.
